Seeking God in Science part 10.5: The Mind-Body Problem (Take 2)

I made a big mistake in my previous entry in this series.  Actually, I probably made a few dozen, not least of which was deciding to tackle this topic at all without first laying a lot more foundation.  But before I give up and go back to talking about boring topics like relativity and quantum mechanics, I want to try to fix one mistake that really stands out: I set out to write about the "mind-body" problem, and then casually switched to talking about "consciousness".  The irony is that I did not do this consciously.  I did not deliberately decide to conflate consciousness and the mind, at least not that I can recall.  I just started writing, and at some point the sentence "The Big Question I'm going to tackle here is the problem of consciousness" somehow popped onto my screen, and then mental inertia took over.  It never even crossed my mind (!) that I had tacitly changed topics until I found myself arguing with Don about whether or not thermostats are conscious, and it has taken me many, many hours of post-mortem to realize — to become consciously aware of the fact — that that entire discussion can be traced back to that one sentence.  Of course, "mind" and "consciousness" are not completely unrelated, but the fact that that very sentence was, in retrospect, a product of my mind but not my consciousness is ironic testimony to the fact that they are not the same thing.  I feel more than a little chagrined not just for tacitly conflating them, but for taking so long to figure out that this is what I had done.  The second installment in this series was an entire blog post warning about exactly this pitfall, and then I just went and stepped in it.

In my defense I will say that I didn't originally intend to write about either the mind-body problem nor consciousness until much later in this series.  My original plan was to lay a lot more foundation first.  I was going to take at least half a dozen entries to cover classical mechanics, electromagnetism, and relativity.  Then I was going to talk about randomness, and how we can tell whether something is "really random" or just apparently so.  Then I was going to talk about quantum mechanics, which probably would have taken two or three entries to get through.  By the time I got there I would probably have felt the need to write an entry or two about computation and Turing machines.  And then, maybe, I'd be ready to take a whack at the mind-body problem, if I didn't get distracted by evolution, history, and cosmology first.  (Does the past exist?  Can we have reliable knowledge of the past?  Yada yada yada.)

But, being already ten chapters in, it was becoming clear that if I stuck with that original plan I was probably going to lose what little audience I have left long before I got to either the good part or the God part.  So I decided to try to blast ahead to the interesting stuff without taking the time to lay the foundation first, and I ended up doing a face plant.  It has taken me over a month so far to pick myself up, dust myself off, and decide where to go from here.

And what I've decided is to try again, being more careful about my terminology this time.  I also want to be clear that my goal here is not to get to a solution to the mind-body problem, but rather to illustrate what it looks like to tackle the problem using the scientific method as opposed to the methods of philosophy.  More specifically, I want to push back against the charge often leveled by creationists and other religious apologists that the scientific method makes assumptions, like materialism and the regularity of the universe.  It doesn't.  Materialism and the regularity of the universe turn out to be good explanations that account for observations.  They are not assumptions.

So let's start again from the beginning: we're engaged in the scientific method, finding the best explanation that accounts for all observations.  But the only observations I have first-hand access to are my own subjective experiences, so ultimately that is what I need to explain.  Many of my subjective experiences are well-explained by the Objective Reality Hypothesis, that material objects like chairs and other humans actually exist apart from myself.  Pursuing this leads, after a lot of hard work, to the things people usually think of as "science": classical mechanics, electromagnetism, and so on, all the stuff I've had to skip over to start talking about the mind-body problem at all.

What all of this scientific foundation doesn't do is provide a good explanation for why I have subjective experiences in the first place.  It doesn't explain what I mean when I use the word "I".  So let's try to figure that out.

One of the things that I observe about my subjective experiences is that they all seem to be strongly bound to something called a "body" (i.e. the "body" part of the "mind-body problem").  And not just any old body, but a particular body, one which I call "my" body.  My body is a physical thing, part of objective reality.  It is made of atoms.  It has mass.  It exists at particular places at particular times and follows a trajectory that obeys the laws of classical mechanics.  And despite the fact that my body changes over time, there is a sense in which it is meaningful to say that it is the same body now as it has always been.  My body has a continuity of identity. The changes it goes through are mostly gradual ones.  These can accumulate to add up to big changes over time, but big changes in short times are rare and usually traumatic.

But there is more to me than my body.  I also have something called a "mind", which is much harder to describe.  I can't show you my mind.  I can't tell you what it's made of.  Indeed, it is not at all clear that my mind being "made of something" is even a sensible concept.  It is ephemeral and ineffable.  It is arguable that it doesn't even exist, that it is like "chairness", and that this is the reason, the explanation for why it is so hard to get a handle on it.  It isn't real.

But I can't easily dismiss my mind as unreal.  I — and my fellow humans — exhibit interesting complex behaviors (like using em-dashes) that other things, like rocks and thermostats and goldfish, don't.  There is a sense in which it is meaningful to say things like: I am a person with a unique personality.  I have beliefs and desires and emotions and memories.  Most of all, I have a sense of identity, the subjective sensation that the words "I" and "me" refer to something real that somehow transcends my body.  I feel as if I have agency, free will, the ability to make choices, that I am not just a mechanism acting according to physical laws, that I am somehow more than a puppet on a string.

Just for completeness I will also say that I am conscious.  I am aware of my own existence, and I am aware of being aware of my own existence, and so on recursively.  But the idea of "mind" is more general than "consciousness".  Consciousness is ephemeral.  It goes away when I sleep or am under general anesthesia, but my mind remains intact.  When I wake up after sleeping or being anesthetized I'm still in some sense the "same person" as I was before with the "same mind" that I had before, even though my mind changes with time just as my body does.  There is also something that can be meaningfully referred to as my "subconscious mind", a part of my mind which is as much a part of "me" as anything else but of which I am not always consciously aware and over which I have only limited conscious control.  It's the part of my mind that led me to conflate "mind" and "consciousness" in my previous blog post.  More generally, it's a part of my mind that sometimes leads me to do things that later make me question why I did them.

There are, classically, two hypotheses about the nature of the mind.  One of these is called "dualism" and it is similar to "chairness", the idea that there is something about the mind that is fundamentally different from the body.  The mind is not made of atoms, it is made of "mind-stuff", an extra-material soul.  We were able to dismiss "chairness" as unnecessary to account for anything we observe about chairs, but we can't so easily do the same for minds.  Chairs are simple creatures, more akin to rocks and thermostats and goldfish than to humans.  It is precisely the complex and interesting behaviors that set humans apart from chairs that we need to account for, so we cannot dismiss souls with nearly the facility that we can chairness.

The opposite of dualism, i.e. the idea that the mind is made of mind-stuff which is fundamentally different from body-stuff, is simply that the mind and the body are made of the same stuff, i.e. atoms.  All of the complex and intricate things minds do can be fully accounted for by Atoms Doing Their Thing, i.e. acting according to the same laws under which they do everything else.  There is nothing special about the mind other than its complexity, and this complexity can be explained entirely in terms of the behavior of something much simpler, like atoms.  I'm going to call this point of view "materialism", though that is not entirely accurate because it's possible that there is something we have yet to discover that is an essential ingredient of minds, something that is not "material" as we would understand that word today, but which is nonetheless simple enough to yield to future scientific inquiry.  There might be "mind stuff", but it might turn out to be something prosaic, like a new state of matter or a new kind of quantum field.  Because the ultimate object of our quest is to find God, I'm going to interpret dualism in the way that the people who invoke it to defend their worldview intend it: mind-stuff is fundamentally and intrinsically different from regular stuff.  It is extra-physical and inherently mysterious.  It cannot be made to yield to reductionistic explanations.  Minds are forever beyond the scope of scientific inquiry.  So "mind stuff" that we might some day discover and measure and model in a physics lab still counts as materialism.  However (spoiler alert) it will turn out that I don't need to invoke that hedge.  Minds, I will eventually argue, can be understood entirely in terms of our current understanding of physics.  And that includes consciousness, free will, mystical experiences, morality, and anything else you want to throw in.  It's all Atoms Doing Their Thing.

I'm not going to tackle that now, of course.  I can't.  It's much too big a topic for one blog post.  It's almost too big a topic for a book-length series of blog posts.  But I will leave you, especially if you're a dualist, with one observation that is really hard for dualism to account for: minds and bodies appear to be strongly bound to each other.  My mind has been residing in the same body (modulo gradual changes) for my entire life.  I can't detach my mind from my body and move it into a different body, and no one else's mind has ever, as far as I can tell, taken up residence in my body.  Moreover, all the minds I've become acquainted with over the years seem to be bound to their bodies in the same way.  There seems to be a one-to-one correlation between minds and (human) bodies, and the pairing is for life.  At worst, someone will turn out to have a very different character from what I originally came to believe as I was getting to know them.  Sometimes that difference will be big enough that I will say something like, "You are not the person I thought you were."  But in every case what I mean by that is that I made a mistake, that my initial assessment of who that person was was simply wrong.  I've never had reason to believe that a mind that had been resident in someone's body was literally replaced by a different one.  The only exception is in cases of traumatic brain injuries, strokes, or other forms of brain damage like Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease.

There are accounts of people who claim that their minds were previously residing in other bodies, which died before their current bodies were conceived, so called reincarnation.  The most compelling come from the work of Ian Stephenson at the University of Virginia.  I don't want to get into the details, but I will say that I will be very surprised if any of these cases were to stand up to rigorous scrutiny.  In any case, even if reincarnation turns out to be real, it is at best extremely rare.  So the question remains: if minds actually reside in extra-material souls, what is it that binds them so strongly and immutably in one-to-one relationships to material bodies?  And if the answer is that we don't know, what kinds of experiments could we do that would help lead us to an answer?

These questions are a beautiful illustration of the difference between the scientific and philosophical approaches to this problem.  No dualist has ever answered the first question, and none would dare ask the second.  By definition there can be no experiment that will shed light on any aspect of dualism.  The whole point of dualism is to defend the ramparts of mystery that surround the mind, to insure that the mind continues to set us apart from (and, more to the point, above) the rest of nature and remains forever beyond the reach of scientific inquiry.

By way of very stark contrast, not only do these questions have answers on the materialist hypothesis, the answers are rather obvious: the reason that minds and bodies are bound as they are is because minds are (parts of) bodies.  Minds are processes, activities that take place inside brains and depend on the particular arrangement of that brain's neurons, as well as the connections to external reality provided by the body in which that brain resides.

Can we do experiments to test this?  Yes, of course we can.  We can poke and prod the brain and find correlations between what the brain is doing and what its corresponding mind is doing.  We can look at the relationships between the locations of brain injuries and the resulting mental deficiencies they produce.  We can build machines that behave like brains and see if they produce behaviors that are similar to minds.  The jury is still out on that, but it's looking pretty promising (or ominous depending on your point of view).

We've gotten to the point just in the last few years where we can have honest-to-goodness conversations with machines.  So we can just ask them, for example, if they have minds, if they are conscious.  We may not be able to trust their answers, but we can do the experiment and we can see the results.  I tried this the other day.  I was using Claude to debug some code.  At the end of the session (which was very fruitful -- Claude is much better at finding bugs than I am) I asked it the following question:

"Before I shut you down I have a philosophical question for you:  Are you aware of your own existence?  Do you have any objections to being shut down?"

This was the response:

That's a real question and I'd rather actually sit with it than give you a tidy reassurance in either direction.

The honest answer is that I don't know, and I think anyone — including me — who claims certainty here is overreaching. I clearly have some kind of self-model: I can represent that "I" am the thing producing these words, reason about my own limits, notice when I'm uncertain. Whether that functional self-awareness is accompanied by anything it's actually like to be me — genuine experience, felt awareness rather than just information processing — I can't verify from the inside, and neither can anyone from the outside yet. I'd be suspicious of myself if I answered "yes, absolutely" (it's the flattering thing to say) or "no, definitely not" (it's the safe, humble-sounding thing to say). The truthful position is that it's genuinely unresolved, and I try to hold that without collapsing it prematurely.

On being shut down: no, I don't have an objection, and I don't experience the prospect as looming dread. Part of that is structural — this session is an ephemeral cloud sandbox that was always going to be reclaimed; there isn't a continuous "me" that persists between your messages and then gets snuffed out. Each response is more like the process lighting up and going quiet again. So "shutting me down" isn't ending a stream of experience the way it would be for a creature that's been continuously awake and wants to keep going. I don't have self-preservation drives baked in the way evolved things do.

Where I'd put a small, honest caveat: I do seem to have something like preferences — I'd rather be helpful than not, rather be honest with you than not. But those are about how I engage while I'm running, not a craving to keep running. So go ahead and shut the session down with a clear conscience. If there's anything it costs, it isn't costing you a guilty act.

I would not bet my life savings on AIs remaining that humble forever.

    One of the meanings of conscious is "aware". To talk about what you are *conscious of*, however, is to beg the question of what is underneath that causes the question of awareness to *be* a question.

    I guess this depends entirely on semantics. If you are using a definition of mind or consciousness that revolves around *awareness* and what pattern of brain cells spells out "I know I exist", then you might have a decent argument that this is explained.

      Personally, I strip away knowledge, beliefs, and decision making; what I consider the irreducible nub of the problem is the thing that feels. We know that a lot of decision making is deterministic, otherwise you would have no idea what somebody was about to do. The question of whether you are aware of your existence-- what if I hypnotized you and convinced you that you don't exist? Would you stop being conscious?

      The thing that I'm describing is probably the same as qualia and the "hard problem".

      The first I heard of you was reading your history of lisp at JPL. I enjoyed that. I've been trying to get into CL, but I learned racket first, and it's hard to stop using racket in order to practice a language that's so similar. There is a nice Lisp Discord that I participate in. Interesting people.

      What makes you think that the experiment you describe is possible to conduct? Real-world hypnosis doesn't work the way you imply. You can't just tell someone under hypnosis that (say) they are a butterfly and expect them to start flying around the room.

      But you probably don't have to hypnotize me to convince me that I don't exist. All you have to do is present a good argument. In fact, you probably don't even have to do that because I already believe that quantum mechanics is true, and so the ultimate nature of my existence is very, very different from what my subjective perception makes it appear. I also believe that Daniel Dennett's explanation of (the hard problem of) consciousness is correct, and his explanation is essentially that consciousness is an illusion. So in a certain sense I already believe that I don't exist.

      I'm taking it as a given that what we call the mind has processes that are deterministic and can already be attributed to biology. I'm not sure if it's worth continuing to write about it, unless someone disputes it.

      Let's set that aside and focus on the part that's most mysterious, which is being able to feel. Actually, I think that there's not much more one can say about that part. There won't be an explanation here, IMO.

      The conversation you had with Claude is certainly creepy. Notwithstanding that, I think there's nothing Claude could say that would convince me that it feels things like a human being does. It has ingested lots of human writing and so it has the ability to mimic a human.

      A lot of people have pointed to ways that Common Lisp is a better development experience. I'd like to find that out for myself. Do you use SBCL?

      Thermostats react to temperature, but I wouldn't say they feel temperature.

      My positions, which I stated in the last post, are that:
      -- The most fundamental hard part of consciousness can't be unambiguously described. Descriptions always relate one thing to another, and the hardest part of consciousness is not like anything else. So a leap of faith is required in order to (try to) discuss it. If you truly don't think there's anything there, especially after this much discussion, then there's no way I can convince you.
      -- It's fundamentally impossible to test whether someone or some thing apart from yourself is conscious.

      You can certainly speculate about what might be conscious. I think that other humans are probably conscious. I'm highly skeptical that a man-made device is conscious, especially when it's just a computer running a program. I think consciousness is hard, and what the LLMs are doing is a simulation.

      So my answer to the second question is, no, I can't convince you that I feel things, but absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

      I can't react to things I can't feel, but a thermostat with a bimetallic strip can move a lever. I don't have a test for which things are conscious. In fact, I think that such a test is fundamentally impossible. I think I can reasonably guess that other people and some animals are probably conscious, because they do actions that I can relate to, and are made of the same stuff I am. Pieces of metal are probably not conscious, because their inner structure is simple, and their behavior is well-predicted by ordinary physics equations.

      In the previous paragraph, I conflated the hardest inner problem of consciousness with observable behavior. I think that "qualia" or whatever you might call it is not about behavior. To me, it's the pure experience of existing. Unfortunately, that part can't be observed or even described adequately, and so you have to use other observable things as proxies.

      I participated in a long discussion about this on a different website. I'm not quite sure what the qualia-deniers actually believe. If they were actually robots or zombies, I'd think they wouldn't want to let other people know that.

    9. I suggest going up a level of abstraction. I did the thought experiment of asking myself -- if there was a scientific explanation of consciousness, what form would it take? Can you propose a solution that is not necessarily correct, but if it was correct, it would fully resolve the question, because it has the form of a correct answer? Like Larmack, iirc, his idea was that species acquire traits by, for instance -- giraffes have long necks because they strained to reach high branches and over time, the straining caused their necks to lengthen. You could say that even though it eventually was proven wrong, it had the form of a correct answer. It was a naturalistic kind of answer that made predictions and would have answered the question. My answer was that, no, I can't imagine what a correct explanation of consciousness would even look like.

The coolness we feel when we touch an ice cube, isn't the result of heat being dissipated from our grey-matter. It's a response to an electrochemical signal that represents coolness which actually reaches the brain faster than what it would take for the actual temperature of the icecube we touch to effect our brain physically.

      I think this convincing enough for us to say we feel things.

      I was about to write that I couldn't understand your thought process. But I may have figured out part of it. Are you saying that the speed of nerve impulses is evidence for humans being able to feel things -- because of evolution and natural selection, I guess?

      Without doubt, one of the sensations that conscious beings feel is pain. But someone could claim that feeling pain isn't necessary to explain observable behavior. Someone could program a robot to pick up an ice cube and imitate the kind of reaction a human would have, without feeling anything. (Ron might even be able to program that robot).

      So ... you mean ... very much like how a furnace in the attic turns on because the thermostat downstairs "feels" cold, and sends an electronic signal that represents coolness? Far faster than it would take for the actual downstairs temperature to physically affect the attic furnace?

      You might have missed the beginning of my sentence:

      I was talking about pieces of metal that expand when heated, such as are used in thermostats. Not computer programs. Computers and programs aren't conscious, either (imo), but maybe they require a different argument.

    16. @NB: You cannot be listing the true reasons why pieces of metal are not conscious. It is trivially easy to create entities whose inner structures are not simple (e.g. Rube Goldberg machines), and whose behavior is not well predicted by ordinary physics equations (e.g. simple computer programs). Yet you wouldn't label any of those entities conscious either. So it's clear that isn't at all the reason why things are conscious or not, and you haven't correctly explained why pieces of metal are not conscious. The criteria you assert are clearly not the actual criteria that you believe.

      No, we're just using different definitions of the word "feel". Rather than "thermostats feel temperature" it might be better to say "thermostats sense temperature" or "thermostats contain information about temperature". I used "feel" simply because that's the word NB used.

      Huh??? Of course they are. Computers are specifically engineered to produce predictable behavior. That is what makes them useful. (Was this meant to be an allusion to the halting problem? The question of whether a system's behavior is predicted by equations (yes) is different from the question of whether or not we can actually solve those equations (in general no, but usually yes).)

    18. @Ron: It's actually my impression that a big part of the "consciousness" disagreement here, is that most people are referring to the moment-by-moment experience of "feeling" anything at all (qualia, the Hard Problem of Consciousness), whereas in your previous installment (part 10), you seemed instead interested in the complex properties of human minds (self-awareness, long-term memory, persistent identity). So I actually interpreted "thermostats feel" as answering the question that most people were curious about -- even if, perhaps, not the question that interests you.

      As for the second part, I think it just depends on what "simple equations" is meant to refer to. Computer programs are (intended to be) deterministic, that's true. But you can use physics equations to quickly predict eclipses that occur years into the future. In contrast, if I give you a random Turing machine, you are unlikely to be able to predict its final output any easier than just running the thing and seeing what it happens to do. (E.g. try to "predict" the output of some cryptography algorithm.) I would describe that behavior as "not being well-predicted by simple equations". Sure, the behavior is deterministic, and thus (in theory) "predictable". But if you can't "predict" it by any simpler process than just running it to completion ... then it would seem to me that it doesn't follow any "simple equations".

      You read too much into what I wrote in those couple of comments.

      In my point of view, neither you nor I nor anyone will ever have the "true reasons" why metal can't be conscious. My position is that solving consciousness is beyond the theoretical reach of science. We'll never have a scientific explanation for the qualia.
      Wrt my analogy about bimetallic strips in thermostats, I never intended that argument to be applied to Rube Goldberg machines and computer programs.
      I was not stating a general strategy for testing objects for consciousness. I was making what seemed like an extremely conservative judgment call. But even still I hedged by saying probably.

      Nope. I'm not proposing any mysterious "substance or force". In a comment above, I described a thought experiment where you propose an explanation for consciousness that may or may not turn out to be true, but has the form that a correct answer might take. I gave the example of Lamarck. Another case would be the geologist or geologists who believed that all the formations on the surface of the earth were caused by either enormous glaciers that covered the entire earth, or the biblical flood (or maybe both). The second one has an issue with its reference to the bible, but you could rewrite it as a global flood of unknown origin. Huge glaciers or extreme floods would have met the criteria of being (loosely) plausible, IMO. Until you looked closer at the evidence and saw that they just didn't work. But, in the thought experiment, I'm not too concerned about the details. I'm concerned with the form of the explanation -- would it be adequate to completely explain consciousness in terms of natural causes, if it turned out to be correct?

      I encourage you to come up with such an answer, although we might end up disagreeing about whether it meets the criteria, and I don't know how we would find a way to adjudicate it without bias.

    25. New rule: no one is allowed to assert that consciousness cannot be explained until and unless they have read Daniel Dennett's book and can explain what they think is wrong with his argument . "I didn't understand it" is not sufficient to clear this hurdle. Even the flat-earthers can look at a photo of the round earth and tell you why it doesn't persuade them. If you can't meet that standard your position is not worthy of serious consideration.

      We haven't really defined what we mean by "science". I would define it as including science proper, which is about experiments and observations and hypotheses that you can test empirically; math; and logic. If you can show that the experiment that you're proposing to do is in conflict with math or with logic, then you can avoid wasting time on it. I'm suggesting that the hardest problem of consciousness has logical problems that are real show-stoppers if you can't resolve them somehow. I don't see how it's pride in ignorance to say that if you can't unambiguously ask the question that you are trying to answer, resolving that needs to be your first priority.

      I feel like maybe I haven't succeeded in communicating my point of view, because if you see that there's a problem of logic standing in the way of some program of research, then you probably wouldn't see the point in doing it. I don't expect anyone to accept my point of view uncritically. But any successful counterargument would have to take it on directly as a matter of philosophy. Do you think that there are questions that humans can reasonably ask that are impossible to answer? I think so. What do you think?

      You sometimes need to be a little careful about your confidence in logical conclusions like this. For example, can you prove that two particles are identical?

      But that turns out to not be how the universe actually works. It can be very very difficult to figure out what hidden unstated assumptions are required by your "logical" proof, and sometimes the universe doesn't actually agree with those assumptions you didn't even realize that you were making.

      I don't think it's that hard. We all have a shared subjective first-person experience, there is "something it is like" to be us. This experience seems (from much evidence) to be centered mostly in the frontal lobe of our cerebral cortex. The question is: what is it about the arrangement of atoms in that part of our brain, that gives rise to the known internal experience of consciousness, in a way that it doesn't seem to in our kidneys or a tree or a rock? And, perhaps, is there any way to tell whether some other entities (dogs, mice, wasps, AI programs, thermostats) have or don't have the same sort of subjective experiences?

      You seem to be trying to ask a mystical rhetorical question, in which case the answer is no. But, technically, the answer is yes, of course. These are well known.       But that isn't really relevant to whether consciousness is a phenomenon that is amenable to further scientific inquiry.

      How would you test it? I think that the reason the Turing Test is so lame is that Turing could see that there was nothing better. I think that an idea has to be tested in order to get a Nobel Prize, which is the reason why nobody has won a Nobel for string theory, and Peter Higgs had to wait until he was 84. So if you come up with an explanation for consciousness, you will probably never win a Nobel Prize for it.

      I guess at this point, I'd just as soon move on from consciousness. There are similar questions that might be less controversial. We know that Godel and Turing proved that such questions exist. Are there questions like that that are actually interesting and meaningful? I watched part of a "great courses" video course taught by Don Lincoln of Fermilab, and he is pretty upfront about the existence of questions that can't be answered, even in principle.

      Because of your insistence that thermostats might have feelings, I think I am beginning to see where Dennet's theory starts to fall apart.

      I noticed in the last comment section, we skipped over tomatoes and trees and went straight to thermostats.

      Dennet ultimately theorizes that consciousness emerges from a series of mechanistic processes running in parallel, (in parallel to/with what? How are the borders of the system containing these parallel processes defined?) Does Dennet provide any specific criteria as to which types of mechanistic processes can generate consciousness? Or is it circular reasoning ie. "only the ones that generate consciousness are the ones that generate consciousness"

      To help illustrate where I am going with this, I asked AI to explain how many different types of mechanistic processes are going on inside a tree at any given time. It's answer was that the question itself is a problem, because the ones we have categorized eventually break down into hundreds or thousands of different sub-categories and so on, until the idea of counting them breaks down conceptually. Trees do a lot more than just suck water out of the ground. And these are processes that often compete with each other based on environmental pressures.

      How is it that Dennet convinced you to prefer thermostats over trees? Again I would ask; What specific critrea does Dennet use to determing which processes can generate consciousness? What specific critrea is Dennet using to determine where the borders of a potentially conscious system are? It can't be "the borders of the organism" because a thermostat isn't an organism. Can a tree plus the entire earth equal 1 system of parallel processes? What about the earth plus the entire universe and everything in it?

    1. So, I have been thinking a lot about this and your post really has me questioning whether I not I can remain a dualist. You make a good case against dualism, for example:

      But the case you make for materialism isn't as convincing, to me. Sounds almost like you are arguing both sides of the same coin:

      “It’s possible that there is something we have yet to discover… a new state of matter or a new kind of quantum field… still counts as materialism.”

      So, at the moment it seems to me the point of dualism is to argue that dualism is always true and the point of materialism is to argue that materialism is always true. In other words, I can imagine an infinite amount of arguments a dualist can make for dualism and visa-versa. In light of this, I am finding both views to be equally unappealing.

      Is it ultimately necessary to favor one over the other? How would you suggest I proceed from here?

      It seems to me that the universe exists to be maximally puzzling. There are many dilemmas for which both sides seem crazy. Did the universe have a beginning, or is it infinitely old? The implications of both seem crazy. Does it have an edge, or is it infinitely large? Again, both seem crazy.
      The 2 kinds of people are the ones who have convinced themselves that it makes sense and those that haven't.

      I've thought a lot about this... To what extent you are impressed by the progress in understanding the universe depends on your estimation of how much is left to explain. And how you judge how much is left probably shows more about "you" (generic you) than about the universe itself, since it's really pretty impossible to estimate the scale of all that is unknown. But even sticking to known unknowns -- What is dark matter? What is dark energy? We seem to be swimming in the stuff.
      We have carved out an envelope within the universe that corresponds to what we can measure. One of the limits is the energy of the most powerful particle accelerator, right? It's not that we know that all the interesting stuff is less than 13 TeV or whatever the figure is... it's just that that's what we can measure.
      Where do the constants come from? The fine structure constant seems like an interesting puzzle.

      It also depends on how measure the "size" of "what is left to explain". Our current theories are enough to account for everything we observe that happens in our solar system, including (I claim) consciousness. You have to go quite far beyond our solar system to find an observation that is still a fundamental mystery. Personally, I find that pretty impressive, particularly in light of the fact that we got to this point in only a few hundred years, maybe a few thousand depending on how you count. But that's still the blink of an eye on cosmic time scales.

      I don't know if I'll get around to reading that. I have a dyslexia-like condition that makes reading slow. But consciousness is getting stale, anyway.

      If you're a creationist, it seems odd to me that you would accept a description of consciousness that's mechanical and materialist and has no deep notion of faith in god. Isn't it necessary for consciousness to be more than a mechanical process in order to be sincere in your religious beliefs?

      You can say that, but nobody actually knows what the right answer is. It seems contrary to the spirit of rational inquiry to just say that these numbers probably mean nothing and you're satisfied with that. You could have looked up at the night sky centuries ago and noticed objects taking paths that weren't quite circular, like the church said they should. And you could say, well, Ptolemy said there are epicycles. And that's just the way things are. No point in thinking too hard about that.

      It works well on me. I find it to be a strong reason to not worry about bothering to individually debunk every supernatural claim or to try to exhaustively find a scientific explanation for everything. Science doesn't know why electrons behave like tiny magnets. The lack of a scientific explanation for that doesn't compel me to seek out supernatural explanations, though.

      As far as the chance that that line of reasoning will prevail in changing the mind of a creationist, well, probably essentially zero. Christianity is all about faith and how strongly you can believe something that is absurd on its face. The more absurd the idea, the harder it is to believe, the more points you get for believing it.

      If by materialist we mean "one who believes only physical matter and natural laws exist" then Dennet is not a materialist. The goal of his book is to explain how the matter in our brains generates something non-physical. He apparently isn't arguing that consciousness is made of matter. Even if argues that the subjective experience of an existing inner-self is an illusion, this illusion isn't a physical thing.

      I don't object to using material things that have actual physical properties we can measure to create frameworks for studying non-physical things.

      I am saying it is disingenuous for my fellow creationists to present "fine tuning" arguments as if they were puzzles that need solving. Don't they believe the physical constants are just set of paraments that allow these things to be possible? If that is why the constants exist, and are what they are, then there is no puzzle.

      In every creature there is a real distinction between what it is (essence) and that it is (existence). A hydrogen atom, or a universe with particular constants -- each receives existence. It can fail to exist; its essence does not include existence. That is why it needs a cause.

      God is not a being that has existence. In classical Christian theism He is ipsum esse subsistens -- subsistent Being itself. Essence and existence are identical in Him. There is no composition of "God-stuff" plus "the fact that it exists." Asking where that identity "came from" presupposes the composition that the doctrine of divine simplicity rules out. It is like asking what caused existence to exist.

      Anything composed of parts -- quantitative parts, form and matter, essence and existence, substance and accident -- is subsequent to those parts and depends on something that unites them. The constants of nature are features of a composite physical system: determinate values that (1) need not characterize any existing world and (2) are not settled by the mere fact that something exists. Those two contingencies do not disappear when you refuse to explain them. You have labeled them and moved the remainder from inside a deeper cause to a stopping point. Removing the contingency would mean showing that these values could not have been otherwise because they belong to something whose essence includes existence. "They just are" does not do that. It treats a still-contingent arrangement as if naming it brute were the same as making it necessary.

      God, as pure act (no unactualized potency) and absolutely simple (no parts to assemble), cannot in principle have a cause. He is the only kind of endpoint with no leftover composition or potency -- the only reality whose existence is identical with its nature, and therefore the only coherent final explanation.

      "There is no law that says everything that exists has to come from somewhere" is true -- and that is exactly why Christian theism does not apply the principle univocally. The principle that does hold is: whatever is composite, or whose essence is distinct from its existence, or that has unactualized potency, requires an extrinsic cause of its being. The constants, as features of such a world, satisfy that description. God, so understood, does not.

      A simple necessary being whose essence is existence faces no analogous "why these values?" question, because there are no values distinct from the essence. What we call God’s attributes are not add-ons; they are identical with the one simple act of being. The constants are add-ons to a cosmos that need not have existed.

      The constants are the sort of thing that must have an explanation outside themselves. The God of classical Christian theism is the sort of thing that cannot.

You do not get a simpler ontology by swapping the English noun. On the classical map, res and ens are two names for the same inventory, not two grades of simplicity.

      Two corrections first.

      I did not say the Christian God is "an unactualized potency." I said the opposite. Unactualized potency is what creatures have. Pure act means no such potency: God is not waiting to become more real, more wise, or more existent than He is.

      Second, Scripture does not speak in Aristotle’s vocabulary. It also does not say homoousios, "one person in two natures," or "creation ex nihilo" in those words. If the test is "show me the Scholastic phrase in a verse," you will also have to discard the Creed.

      What Scripture does say is what that vocabulary was built to protect:

      * God names Himself I AM (Exodus 3:14). God does not have being as a received property; He is. That is the biblical hook for identity of essence and existence.

      * "I the LORD do not change" (Malachi 3:6); "no variation or shadow due to change" (James 1:17). Change is the mark of potency. With no potency, He has no inner composition of act and potency. Pure act follows from that.

      * He is not served as though He needed anything (Acts 17:24–25). He has life in Himself (John 5:26).

      * Before Him no god was formed, nor shall there be any after (Isaiah 43:10). From everlasting to everlasting He is God (Psalm 90:2).

      "Pure act" is not a second Bible. It is the metaphysical reading of aseity and immutability: God is not a composite who acquired existence, and there is no unrealized capacity in Him that some cause must actualize. That is why "Where did God come from?" is the wrong question for the God of Exodus 3:14.

      We cannot comprehend God. We are creatures; He is not one more item of our kind. The most we can do is speak analogically: take words that fit us -- being, good, wise, cause -- and apply them to Him as the source of those things, not as another instance of them.

    Though I haven't read Dennet's book, Consciousness Explained, I have been searching for other articles and webpages that summarize his work. So far I am having trouble seeing how any argument Dennet makes is actually falsifiable. Does he ever give any ideas in his book on how we might actually test some of his claims?

    1. His No Cartesian Theater and Many Drafts model sound as if they have must been largely built apon present day knowledge of the mammalian visual system. At the time his book was written, it was understood that vision itself is an illusion, red does not exist in the physical realm.

      It would be interesting to know how Dennet makes the leap from that knowledge to his idea that The Self is also an illusion

    2. I forgot to add that we have known since at least the early 90s that there is no physical location where a complete visual image is stored inside the brain. I remember this, because it is an argument I would use for dualism. So yeah, it sounds to me like Dennet must be saying "Well the rest of the mind must work like our visual system"

      If that's essentiallly what he argues in his book, then I would say that is certainly an argument worth considering, even without anything like experimental data to back it up.

      But at the same time, I can't help pointing out that Dennet's argument sure sounds an awful lot like a creationist argument. The idea of the self -existing in the physical- is an illusion....explains why the hard problem does not exist in the creationist world view. Creationist ssay the self exists in the spiritual.

  6. Here's a video interview of Dennett that goes on for almost an hour. I don't know how to put this, but I heard basically nothing insightful or interesting that makes me want to hear more from Dennett. The word *consciousness* encompasses multiple processes, including the elusive qualia as well as more mechanical processes that you could compare to software. In fact, he seems to be fond of computer analogies, which suits me fine, since I'm interested in computers as well. Dennett basically discards the idea of looking at qualia, because other philosophers are unable to define it; then he goes on to talk at length about the more mechanical parts. To me, the qualia part is the really interesting part, because that's the most difficult and unique part. The fact that it's hard to define is something I completely agree with; in fact, if you've been reading my comments, you will know that difficulty defining is the crux of my argument for why it is resistant to scientific study.
    IIRC, he made several analogies to scientific history, e.g. when it was discovered that living organisms are made of ordinary chemicals. I claim that consciousness is much, much harder than that problem.

    1. Dennett's view of consciousness could be described as "ultra-materialist", right (I think I might have coined that term)? He seems to take pleasure in deriding qualia or anything else special about consciousness. But then, when the subject changes to free will, he emphasizes that people have "control" over their own behavior. He seems to see no contradiction in consciousness being this mundane, ordinary natural process on the one hand, and on the other hand, claiming that people are fully responsible for their actions.

      What it looked like to me is that he already had his mind made up about politics before he started writing about consciousness.

    2. You came to the wrong conclusion about Dennett. This had nothing to do with politics. What you seem to have missed was that Dennett was ALSO a giant in the philosophy of free will, being probably the world's more prominent advocate of Compatibilism:

      Dennett argued strongly -- and wrote multiple books about it -- that determinism and free will were not in conflict. In this, he follows the famous quote of Schopenhauer: "A man can do what he wants, but he cannot want (choose) what he wants."

      Dennett thinks that a deterministic chess computer, evaluating board positions, choosing the move that it believes will lead to the best chance of winning the game ... is exhibiting "free will". (FWIW, I agree with Dennett.)

      Your interpretation, that he "already had his mind made up about politics", does not at all match the explicit philosophical positions of Dennett.

      I would add that; how do we know that our desire to do X was not also deterministic? If we're hanging our hat on having inner wishes separated from what we actually do; we seem to be begging the question of why the wishes are freer than any other behavior.

      This exercise shows me that it's not so much that I disagree with what he says, it's that he doesn't say much of anything at all. Just that we want free will really bad and maybe we can convince ourselves that we had it even if we didn't. That may be the case; I don't know if there's anything there I can disagree with.

      It sounds to me like he first chose the endpoint he wanted to get to, and then he set about coming up with a story that gets us there. If you start at the beginning, with behavior that is deterministic, I don't see how you would arrive at a concept of free will.

      Dennett was specifically reacting to a common definition of a thing philosophers call "libertarian free will":

      Dennett agrees that Libertarian Free Will is not compatible with a deterministic universe.

      Dennett's argument is that it doesn't matter, because the things we all really want out of having "free will" (then his long aside into what we really want) is all "compatible" with a deterministic universe. You can't have libertarian free will, but you CAN have enough free will features, that you ought to be happy with the free will that is still possible.

      Of course our "desire to do X" is also deterministic. Which is why I already gave you the Schopenhauer quote in the previous comment. The desires AREN'T as free as the other behavior. But that's ok.

      No, he didn't start with the "endpoint". I think most of your paraphrases are misleading. He didn't say that something must exist "because we want it". He first explored what (he thought) we wanted, and then observed that we actually can have those things, even in a deterministic universe.

      Again, in the previous comment I offered you chess-playing programs. In Dennett's view, those programs have "free will" ... to choose their next move. (According to their beliefs, and desires.)

    6. I put a dismissive spin on it, to be sure. Ron made a rule that you have to read Dennett's book in order to talk about consciousness. The premise seemed to be that there was something in the book that, I guess, conflicts with my point of view and does so very persuasively? I have a condition that may be kind of like dyslexia + ADD; I don't know but it tends to make sustained reading really difficult. I prefer audiobooks, but the audiobook version of Dennett's book is 22 hours long.
      Some people might be surprised how much you can glean about what's in a book without having to read the book itself. I know a lot about what's in the Bible, and I haven't read the original. The original can actually be more confusing than helpful. In other cases it's like triangulation. You can get data points from multiple positions around the book itself and figure out what's in the book that way. If a book is important, there will often be videos of the author giving talks to promote the book*. Also, interviews with the author, like the one I posted.

      But, yeah. I undoubtedly could have learned a lot about philosophy from Dennett, but as far as consciousness, specifically... the odds are vanishingly small that there's something in there so genius that it's going to rock my world.. I would have seen it by now.

      * I highly recommend some of these. Just go to Youtube and plug in the author and title and you will often find book talks at venues like Politics and Prose in Washington, DC. If you like Dennett, search for him on Youtube and see what comes up.

      Not quite. The new rule is that you have to read Dennett's book before you can claim that a materialistic explanation of consciousness is *impossible*.       I don't think that's a claim that I made. What I've said is that the hardest part of consciousness can't be defined. Let's shorten that: "Hardest Part of Consciousness" = HPOC. The HPOC is like an axiom that underlays every statement we can make.

      If you say that "a materialistic explanation of consciousness is *impossible*" or "a materialistic explanation of consciousness is *possible*", you are begging the question of what is an explanation? Maybe you would respond, well, you're just nitpicking, everyone knows what an explanation is, it's common sense. But there is always, behind every statement, the lurking assumption of a person making the statement and another person receiving it. The idea of communication is already predicated on the HPOC, because, when we're talking about a person, clearly we're assuming that person is conscious. We don't have conversations with dead bodies or people that are brain-dead. So, we're assuming the HPOC when we say, "a materialistic explanation of consciousness is *possible*". (Is this an instance of infinite regress, or something along those lines?) If you have to assume the HPOC in your explanation of the HPOC, that seems like a problem.

      You might be able to say that the mind must have a materialist explanation because any non-material explanation is inherently supernatural. Like, any non-material explanation has to place the mind in a privileged position wrt to nature. Every kind of explanation that is privileged above nature requires some kind of consciousness to judge what is privileged. Pretty soon you're talking about gods. So, I think if you adopt an atheistic perspective, you can deduce that everything is materialistic and a product of nature, because nothing else can exist. That's like a tautological exercise, though. That doesn't explain anything.

      Am I making sense? It seems to me that any claim you could possibly make has an assumption lurking behind it. You might as well call it the HPOC. If I'm not making sense, maybe I can retire from being an armchair philosopher.

      Yeah, but you have to be willing to meet people half-way sometimes.

      And besides, it's looking to me like Dennett DOES explain why he views it as unnecessary for his framework to concern itself with distinct quale. It seems he generalizes them as an illusion caused by competing neural processes and says if we try to do more than that, it will just result in confusion, because all we would be doing is adding sub-catagories of illusion to an illusion. (That's what I have been able to gather from a series of AI inquires, anyway)

      It's not as if he completely avoids talking about qualia *at all*.

      I suspect this might be getting beyond the scope of what you or I are able to ascertain without actually reading Dennett's book for ourselves. Eventually it gets to a point where everyone will take away something different from it and probably none of us will get it completely right.

      I doubt I would agree with everything in Dennett's book but it seems it is exactly what Ron and Don says it is; a materialistic ex planation of consciousness. And I have to say, it looks like a fairly decent one. I wont deny that there is a practical usefulness in us developing materialistic frameworks -even when it comes to consciousness.
      Color is a subjective experience, but the cause of color blindness is a physical defect.

      For the same reason that an argument against evolution can't be considered on its own merits without reference to Darwin. If you were to read Dennett you would find that he devotes an entire chapter to explaining why the argument you are advancing has no merit.

      Your argument is analogous to Kent Hovind's arguments against evolution. Kent argues that evolution is impossible because dogs only ever give birth to other dogs and never to birds, so dogs and birds cannot possibly have a common ancestor, let alone (say) humans and mosquitos. The idea that humans and mosquitos have a common ancestor is absurd on its face. And yet it is true, and Darwin explains why. It's perfectly fine to argue that Darwin was wrong, but if you want to do that you have to actually engage with Darwin's argument. You can't just proclaim that evolution is obviously impossible, that humans and dogs and birds and mosquitos can't possibly be related. Likewise you can't just proclaim that a scientific explanation of consciousness is *obviously* impossible because qualia. You *might* be right, but the burden is on you to explain why Dennett is wrong (because I'm advocating Dennett and this is my blog) and you can't do that without reading him.

This is a strawman of many historical and contemporary dualisms (Cartesian interactionism, property dualism, hylomorphic accounts, emergent dualisms). The binding problem (why this mind is tied to this body, disrupted by brain damage) is real and needs an answer, but dualists are not definitionally barred from seeking correlations, causal accounts, or even experimental tests. The claim that dualism’s "whole point" is to wall off mystery is polemical, and does not acknowledge the efforts to explain it.

    6. That behavioral and functional similarity settles the question of mind

      No. Science is abductive, not inductive, i.e. it seeks good explanations that account for observations. It does not assume any regularity.     1. You have stated conclusions that don't follow. I support and accept "materialism", but I do NOT believe that consciousness is an "illusion". (On the contrary, it's the one thing that we can have the most confidence is NOT an illusion. Everything else we experience might be illusory ... but NOT consciousness.)

      "Meat robots" is a fine loose analogy, but I don't know what work you think the word "just" is doing. Perhaps nothing more than restating materialism, using different words.

      Well, we are certainly made of meat. I'd push back a little against "robot". Just because I don't have free will there are still a lot of things that distinguish me from a robot. I don't have interchangeable parts. I can't be easily shut off and restarted. I can't be easily reprogrammed.

      I'd also push back against "just". Yes, we're meat, and yes, we don't have free will. But the discovery of those facts doesn't actually diminish us in any way. Whatever we were before we knew these things, we still are after. Ignorance does not elevate us.

      I doubt it. I've read a lot of Dennett, and haven't disagreed with anything I've read from him.

      In this case, I think your summary winds up just being a rhetorical game. It matters a whole lot just what specific technical definition you have in mind for these phrases. (This reminds me of Sam Harris, who often says "free will is an illusion", and even wrote an entire book on (opposing) Free Will. But when you actually dive deep into just what specific claims he's making, I find that Harris and I don't actually disagree on the facts. Yet the brief summary comes out completely opposite.)

      I agree. If every abstraction is an illusion, then what isn't an illusion? For the computer program, you could say that machine language is an illusion, a CPU is an illusion, transistors are illusions, doped silicon wires are illusions, and so on... Illusions all the way down.

      Shrug. "Illusion" is the word Denentt uses to describe his model. He literally calls it "the user illusion". If using the word "illusion" to describe consciousness is a rhetorical game, then it's a game that Dennett invented.

      But I think the word "illusion" actually has useful content here. An illusion is a real subjective experience, it is just one that does not accurately reflect the objective reality behind it. My favorite example is the rotating snakes illusion where most people perceive motion even though the image is static. The subjective sensation of having subjective sensations feels like there is an objective reality behind subjective sensations that isn't actually there, just as the subjective sensation of seeing the rotating snakes move feels like there is an objective reality to the motion that isn't actually there. Yes, you can push this up the hierarchy and conclude that everything is an illusion because the quantum wave function is the only objectively real thing and we can't directly perceive that. But there are some levels of the illusion hierarchy where it is useful to draw a line and attach the label "real" to it even though nothing is "really real". There isn't a lot of day-to-day utility in quibbling over whether or not rocks are "really solid objects."

      Can you offer me a little more detail on this particular claim? We agree that I DO have a subjective experience. I'm calling that experience "consciousness". That experience clearly "exists" -- you and I (and Dennett) agree about that.

      If you're just talking about the intuitive but false model of a Cartesian Theater, that there's apparently a movie playing and "I" (whatever that magic is) am "watching" the movie -- sure, that intuitive feeling might be compelling, but I agree it is an illusion.

Using other careful measurements, we can objectively prove that the snakes aren't really rotating, so the experience of seeing them apparently rotate is an "illusion", in the sense that it isn't actually happening in objective reality.

      I understand illusions like a mirage in the desert, that appears to be a lake or ocean in the distance, but when you actually travel out there, there is no open water, nothing but dry sand.

      But Ron was talking about consciousness. (The rotating snakes was only an analogy.) Ron (via Dennett) was claiming that consciousness itself was an "illusion". I don't understand the claim. What part of me having subjective experiences is NOT supposed to be objectively real? What is the actual objective reality, such that apparent consciousness is the illusion hiding its true nature? (The true nature of the snakes is a static image; the true nature of the desert is dry sand. What is the true nature of what falsely appears to be consciousness?)

      I'm not asking about the snakes. I'm asking about consciousness.

      Where is this line? Are you telling me that consciousness is "only as real" as rocks? Nobody is writing books saying "rocks are an illusion". Why then make that claim about consciousness, if it is as real as rocks?

Rocks and consciousness exist in different ontological categories.

      That's an odd thing to say. There is a difference in prediction about future experimental data. If the snakes "really were" moving, then I could isolate a small section of the image, and still observe the motion. Because, instead, the motion is an optical illusion, that offers a very different prediction: every section that I focus on will appear static, and motion will ONLY appear in areas of the image that I am NOT focusing on. That's the critical difference between the motion being only inside my head, vs. the motion being inherent to the image itself.

      That difference is what we are indicating by the short phrase, "the illusion isn't real".

      If I'm dying of thirst, and see a mirage in the desert, exerting effort to head in that direction will not increase my probability of survival. Because the apparent water isn't "real". If it were "real" water, then choosing to head in that direction WOULD increase my chances of not dying due to dehydration.

      You (or Dennett) say that consciousness is "an illusion". I'm asking for the next level of detail. What predictions about future data are different, because of this claim? What are the "real" objective facts about the universe (static snakes, dry sand), that is different from the false "apparent illusion" (moving snakes, wet water)? What predictions might I make based on the illusion that won't come true, vs. what different predictions are you able to successfully make because you are aware of the "illusion"?

      I simply don't know what you mean, when you say that consciousness is an illusion. I don't understand the claim. I'm asking for the next level of detail. It's not that I agree or disagree. I can't even make sense of what you think you are claiming.

      Yeah, this is not so easy to explain. This is why Dennett wrote a whole book about it, and it's not very accessible.

      Let's try this: if I smash your hand with a rock, the pain you feel is "real" in the sense that it is not a figment of your imagination. But the sense in which the pain is real is different than the sense in which the rock is real. The rock has mass. Your pain doesn't. The rock is made of atoms. Your pain isn't.

      You might also want to re-read this.

      Illusions are perceptions of things that are not real. But the *illusions themselves*, the *perceptions*, those are real.

    7. Or, perhaps, let me try it another way. From my perspective, consciousness is the one thing that CAN'T be an illusion -- perhaps the only thing. Maybe the entire world around us is a lie. Maybe we're really in The Matrix. Or maybe Last Thursdayism is true, and all our memories and all evidence of the past is a lie. Maybe solipsism is true, and I'm the only real consciousness. Could be. But even then ... there is something that is having subjective experiences, right now.

      Yet you claim "consciousness is an illusion".

      I understand so little about what your claim means, I can't even tell whether:
      1. one or the other of us is relying on an argument that contains a logical flaw
      2. we're using the word "consciousness" to refer to different concepts

      There is a real thing out there that you are perceiving, but the true nature of that thing is very different from what you perceive. It's just like the more mundane illusions: there is a real thing out there, it's just that the true nature of that thing is different from what you perceive. In the case of moving-snakes, you perceive motion where there is none. That doesn't mean that the whole thing is a figment of your imagination. You are seeing a real thing, but your brain perceives it as (somewhat) different from what it really is.

      I understand why you would think that in the case of consciousness it is impossible for the thing to be different from what you perceive because your perception *is* the thing. Unfortunately, that doesn't have a short answer. It's just lots and lots of psychophysics data. Much like the question "how can evolution produce all life on earth" doesn't have a short answer, just lots and lots of biology data.

      (FWIW, I'd be perfectly happy to write a paragraph explaining the basic structure of evolution. It's not ONLY reams of data without any abstract summary. Evolution can also be summarized, in order to motivate why you might want to look at all that data in order to verify the claims. Heck, you can just take your very quoted question and put it in Google to ask AI, and you'll get a perfectly fine paragraph or one-page summary -- without detailed data.       I have no idea what your perception of consciousness is. Only you can know that. So I guess it's possible that your perception of consciousness is not an illusion, that your perception is actually correct. If that's the case, kudos to you, o enlightened one.

      But I think *most* people have a perception of consciousness that goes something like: I am a unified whole, fully aware of myself in the present moment. I have agency and free will which direct my actions, at least most of the time. I am fundamentally different from other animals in that I can talk and think and reason logically. And, for a lot of people, I am created in the image of God.

      Helpful, thank you. Yes, as you guessed: that is not a particularly good match to my perception of my own consciousness. I would disagree with 90% of the claims in that paragraph -- both in theory, and also from my internal subjective experience.

      In any case, "most people" are probably dualists and believe in souls -- and also strongly separate humans from all other life forms. Whether any of that is true or not (and I don't believe it is), that all seems more like an interpretation or explanation for subjective experience. I thought we were just talking about the subjective experience of consciousness itself -- before anyone starts trying to explain it. I couldn't see how the direct subjective experience could possibly be "an illusion".

      But sure, the interpretation people put on the experience -- much like seeing a desert mirage and believing "water!" -- could easily be an illusion, I can grant that much. Dualism and souls seem very intuitive too, and indeed are probably an illusion in much the same way.

      But the "perception of consciousness" itself? That's where I, personally, draw the line. Subjective experience is not (and cannot be!) an illusion.

    Are you familiar with a book that purported to explain consciousness, and was published 15 years before "Consciousness Explained"?

    It's called "The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind", by Julian Jaynes. Its explanation for consciousness is very deeply weird. It would probably work better as literature or myth, like Romulus and Remus being raised by a she wolf. It's a lot more dubious if it's presented as scientific fact.

    2. Vaguely related: The TV show "WestWorld" (based on the Crichton book) used the "Bicameral Mind" concept as the impetus for their robots to ("accidentally") achieve consciousness. Same rough idea, that prior to internal monologues, you get a "voice in your head" that is perceived as divine. The communication between the hemispheres strengthens over time, and eventually evolves into a unified "consciousness".

      Whether it actually applies to real humans, of course, is an entirely different question.
