Seeking God in science part 10: The Mind-Body Problem

The title of this series, "Seeking God in Science", was meant to be a metaphor.  This should not come as a surprise.  We are (almost certainly) not going to find a literal supernatural being using the scientific method.  But — and I cannot emphasize this enough — this is not because the scientific method is prejudiced against such an outcome.  This is a charge often leveled against science by religious apologists, that science assumes naturalism and so it is structurally incapable of discovering extra-natural truths.  This is absolutely false, and anyone who says this either does not understand the scientific method or they are deliberately misrepresenting the facts (a.k.a. lying).  The scientific method is simply to find the best explanation that accounts for all observations.  If that explanation turns out to be God, the method has no objections.

The fact that God turns out to be unnecessary to explain any observations is far from obvious.  For most of human history the very idea that God was unnecessary would have gotten you laughed out of the room (if not burned at the stake).  Even today the vast majority of people believe that there is some kind of supernatural force of entity at work in the world, either now or in the past, though the sphere of influence of this entity is often much smaller than it was in the past.  Many observations that were once attributed to gods are now widely accepted as natural phenomena: the behavior of stars and planets, weather, earthquakes, and so on.

But there are some observations that remain stubbornly mysterious, the so-called Big Questions.  How did we get here?  Why are we here?  And, possibly the most mysterious of all, what exactly are we?

My original plan for this series was to try to sneak up on these Big Questions step-by-step, starting with intuitively obvious things like the classical mechanics of rigid bodies (with chairs as my canonical example), moving from there to information theory, thermodynamics, and the theory of computation, and then, finally, quantum mechanics for the big finish.  But based on the feedback I've gotten so far I've decided that approach is probably not going to work.  The attention span of a modern audience, especially a young audience, isn't long enough to keep their interest long enough to get through all that.  Rather than throw in the towel I'm going to try something different: a full-frontal assault on one of the Big Questions without having laid all of the necessary groundwork beforehand.  This argument will necessarily have some holes in it, and we won't get all the way to the Answer.  But I hope that it will show that the problem is not beyond the scope of scientific inquiry.

The Biq Question I'm going to tackle here is the problem of consciousness.  What is it?  How does it work?  Can it be explained naturalistically, or is our conscious experience evidence of the supernatural or the divine?  Two spoiler alerts: first, no, consciousness is (almost certainly) not evidence of the supernatural.  And second, if you want to get closer to The Answer than I am going to get here, go read Daniel Dennett's book, "Consciousness Explained."  A word of warning, though: this is an academic work, and not particularly accessible.  One of my goals in this series was to present a more easily accessible account of Dennett's work.

So, to the task.  As always when we apply the scientific method we must start with a Problem, an observation that cannot be accounted for by our current best explanation, with the understanding that all observations are ultimately individual subjective experiences.  The existence of objective reality is not a given.  It is a hypothesis, the Objective Reality Hypothesis, that I have accepted to explain my observations of things like chairs and other humans.  Most other humans that I've met seem to accept the Objective Reality Hypothesis.  At least, they act as if they do.  All of my observations are consistent with the Meta-Objective-Reality-Hypothesis, namely, that most people accept that chairs and other people are real things external to themselves.  I don't need anything extra-physical like "chairness" to explain anything I observe about chairs, nor to explain anything I observe in other people's behavior in their interactions with chairs.  I have never met anyone who denied the objective existence of chairs.  If I were to ever meet such a person I would probably explain their behavior as trolling or mental illness.

Consciousness is different.  Consciousness is something I experience, and the behavior I observe in other people is consistent with the hypothesis that they experience it too.  But consciousness is very different from chairs.  I can see and touch chairs.  So can other people.  So can machines.  So can cats.  Moreover, when I see and touch a chair, someone else can see and touch the same chair.  We can agree on its properties, its location, its size and shape, the material it's made of, what color it is, how much it weighs.

None of these things are true of consciousness.  I can neither see nor touch consciousness, neither mine nor anyone else's.  The only reason I have to believe that consciousness exists at all is my direct subjective experience of it, and (my direct subjective experience of) the behavior I observe in others, and specifically, other people's testimony of experiencing consciousness, which seems to match my own personal subjective experience.

So one possibility that needs to be considered is that consciousness is an illusion.  There are subjective experiences that really don't correspond to anything objectively real.  I have to stress the distinction between an illusion and a delusion.  A delusion is a subjective experience that is not shared with others.  It may or may not correspond to something objectively real.  The voices that a schizophrenic hears might be coming from a supernatural realm, or they might just be the neurons in their brain misfiring and injecting signals directly into their auditory system, but either way they are literally hearing voices.  It's just that those voices aren't produced by vibrating air molecules.

Illusions are different.  They are common across most humans.  When most humans look at the rotating-snakes illusion, they (we) literally see motion even though the image is actually static.  The neurons in our brains that normally detect motion are being stimulated, just not by things actually moving in objective reality.  Or consider watching a movie, or being in a virtual-reality simulation, or even just looking at a photograph.  You are seeing things that aren't really there.

Of course, there is still something there — the screen.  It is just that the nature of the thing you perceive is different from the nature of the thing that is really there.  You — along with most other humans — perceive motion even though in objective reality there is none.

So the idea that consciousness is an illusion is not falsified by either the fact that you perceive it, nor the fact that everyone else seems to perceive it.

There is still a Problem, though: in order to have a subjective experience of anything at all there has to be something that is having the experience.  Consciousness is not just any old subjective experience, it is the subjective experience.  The very idea of "subjective experience" is inextricably entangled with consciousness.  It seems fundamentally impossible for a non-conscious entity to have a subjective experience.

And yet a non-conscious entity can act as if it is having a subjective experience.  Nowadays we can build an anthropomorphic robot, show it a chair, ask "What do you see?", and be completely unsurprised when the robot replies "I see a chair."  We can easily program the robot to respond "yes" when asked "Are you conscious?  Are you aware of your own existence?"

Let us stipulate that such a robot is not actually conscious, at least not necessarily.  It is at least possible (in fact, it seems likely, at least to me) that such a robot would not in fact be conscious, not actually have subjective experiences, notwithstanding its replies to inquiries.  It is possible that such a robot would be a philosophical zombie, an entity whose behavior is indistinguishable from a conscious entity but which is not in fact a conscious entity.

Is the reverse possible?  Is it possible to build a robot that is actually conscious, or is there something about being a biological entity that is required for consciousness?  Of course we don't yet know the answer to that, but we can observe that we can replace a lot of our biological parts with non-biological alternatives without threatening our claim to being conscious.  We can have artificial limbs, artificial hearts, at least partially artificial ears and eyes, and all that just with today's technology.  The only thing that is not clear is whether an artificial brain can be conscious, and, if so, how could we distinguish an artificial brain that is actually conscious from one that just acts as if it is.

We can also ask the converse: is it possible to have a conscious entity that does not act as if it is?  The answer there is almost certainly yes: there is a rare and horrific medical condition called "locked-in syndrome" which renders a person unable to move (except for their eyes) but they remain (as far as we can tell) fully conscious.  It is not hard to imagine a similar situation where even eye movements are affected.

In a situation like that, where a person's behavior was literally indistinguishable from someone under general anesthesia, how could we possibly know if they were conscious?  Well, one way is if they somehow recovered from their condition and were able to report their experience.  But note that for this to be possible they would have to remember the experience.  If you think about it, this is the only possible way we could distinguish between someone being fully immobile but conscious, and being under general anesthetic.  One of the distinguishing features of general anesthetic is that you can't remember what happened while you were under.  How can we be sure that a person under general anesthetic isn't actually conscious, but just loses the capacity to form memories?

I submit that this rhetorical question is actually a key to understanding consciousness.  I can't think of any way to make this argument rigorous because consciousness is such a slippery eel, but I submit that being able to form memories is essential to consciousness, a necessary (though obviously not sufficient) condition.  I'll make this argument in anther way: when I speak of my subjective experiences, what is the referent of the word "my"?  What is the thing having the experience?  Well, it's me, and a big part of what makes me "me" is my history.  The person I am is in some sense defined by my knowledge and experiences, which is to say, by things I remember.  Even if I suffer from amnesia (or simply old age), if I can still function as a human being, if I can talk or even just brush my teeth, I have to be remembering something in order to perform those tasks.  I can't conceive of any way that it could possibly make sense for a thing to be conscious without remembering anything.

As I mentioned before, memory might be necessary, but it alone is clearly not sufficient for consciousness.  Many non-conscious things have memory, with computers being the obvious example.  But human memory has an interesting feature which can be demonstrated by psychophysics experiments: it is malleable.  People can have the subjective experience of remembering things that demonstrably did not happen, that could not have happened.  This plays out on time scales both large and small.  On large time scales it is possible to implant false memories through suggestion.  On small time scales it is possible to show that your conscious awareness of your surroundings lags reality by a good fraction of a second, which is the time scale your neurons operate on, and that what you consciously perceive does not always correspond to objective reality.

So maybe your subjective experience of consciousness itself does not correspond to objective reality.  Maybe consciousness itself is an illusion.  That would explain why we can't measure it objectively, but on the other hand it raises another Problem.  When I say, "I have a subjective experience of seeing a chair" I mean more than the mere fact that I can see the chair, and that my behavior reflects the fact that I can see the chair.  I can build a robot that can see chairs and behave accordingly, but that robot won't (necessarily) have a subjective experience of seeing the chair.  The subjective experience is more than the mere seeing of the chair, it is being aware of seeing the chair.  But it is even more than that.  It is being aware of being aware of seeing the chair, and being aware of being aware of being aware of seeing the chair, and so on in a seemingly infinite loop.  A robot can be aware of seeing a chair (a better example would be that a self-driving car can be aware of objects around it like pedestrians and other cars).  But a robot (or a self-driving car) is not (necessarily) conscious.  The difference (or at least one of the differences) between awareness and consciousness is this recursive self-application of awareness to itself.

This observation would seem to eliminate the possibility that consciousness is an illusion.  If the subjective experience of consciousness is real (and it is, at least for me) then there has to be something real backing up that experience, some "substrate" for the emergent experience to emerge from, some base case for the recursion.  An old friend of mine in my JPL days, Joe Provenzano, put it like this: if consciousness is an illusion, who is being illused?  An illusion is a disconnect from objective reality, but there still has to be something at the other end of that disconnect.

That "something" is usually called a "mind", and the question of how the mind relates to the brain is called the mind-body problem.  There are two possibilities: the first is that minds can be explained entirely in terms of the material properties of people's brains in a manner analogous to how chairs can be explained entirely in terms of the material properties of the atoms that comprise them.  The weird and seemingly magical properties of minds are a consequence merely of the vastly greater complexity of brains compared to chairs.

The other possibility is that minds require something immaterial, something outside of the physical properties of the brain, to explain them.  I'm going to follow convention and call that a "soul", though I want to be clear that I don't intend for that word to carry any of the usual theological baggage associated with it.  A soul in this case may or may not be supernatural, may or may not have anything to do with any deity, may or may not be a natural phenomenon.  The only stipulation is that they exist outside of people's brains, including the possibility that they could exist outside of space and time itself.

I am, of course, ultimately going to argue in favor of material minds and against souls, though, again of course, I am only going to be able to make the tiniest dent in that argument here.  I'm going to just point out a few things that I hope will sow some seeds of doubt in you if you are currently an advocate of the soul hypothesis.

First, there are clear correlations between brain states and mental states, including consciousness.  The most obvious is that your conscious experience is strongly bound to the physical location of your body and hence to the physical location of your brain.  If your soul exists, its conscious perspective on the world is almost always the perspective of your physical body.  What is "here" and "now" to your consciousness is also "here" and "now" to your body and brain.  There are anecdotal reports of "out of body experiences" but there is no evidence that these are actually real in the sense that the experience corresponds to objective reality.  (It would be pretty easy to do an experiment to test this.  Most out-of-body experiences seem to happen in hospitals.  So take a piece of cardboard, write a random number on it, and mount it on the ceiling so that it can be seen from above but not from below.  If anyone claiming to have an out-of-body experience can tell you what that number is, that would be strong evidence that the experience was actually real.)

Second, using modern technology we can see, at least in broad brushstrokes, what kinds of brain activity correspond with being conscious as opposed to being asleep or under general anesthesia or in a coma.  Third, we can alter our subjective experience of consciousness with various chemicals (with general anesthesia being an extreme example).

So if souls are real, they have to interact with the brain somehow.  If nothing else, there has to be some mechanism by which the material things that influence consciousness exert that influence on the soul.  And that has to run both ways.  The soul has to also be able to influence the brain somehow.  Somewhere between the nerve impulses going in to the brain and the nerve impulses coming back out, there has to be something that happens differently than it would if souls did not exist.  If everything the brain does is exactly the same with and without souls, then, ipso facto, souls are not necessary to explain any observations.  That is the scientific definition of a thing that doesn't exist.  There might be technological limitations to our ever observing those differences, but there has to be something in the brain that could potentially be observed in principle that required souls to explain.  Otherwise, material minds would suffice.

There are two other potential explanations for consciousness besides souls and minds which I am going to list here just for completeness.  The first possibility is that I am the only truly conscious entity in the universe.  Despite the behavior of other humans being qualitatively indistinguishable from mine, they nonetheless do not actually have the same subjective experience as I do.  In other words, my consciousness is real, but yours isn't.  Your outward signs of consciousness are fake, a simulation of consciousness, not the real thing.  You are a philosophical zombie (PZ), a robot, an entity that behaves as if it is conscious but isn't really.  A closely related explanation is solipsism, which says that I am the only thing that actually exists and everything else that I perceive is just a figment of my imagination.

The problem with both of these is pretty obvious: they only work for me.  Of course, you can adopt variations on these hypotheses which say that your consciousness is the only legitimately real one, or that everyone (including me) is a figment of your imagination.  But you cannot consciously adopt the hypothesis that my consciousness is the only real one.  The problem with these hypotheses is the same as the problem with last-thursdayism: these are not individual hypotheses, they are a vast family of hypotheses (over 8 billion of them), all of which are consistent with the objective data, but only one of which can possibly be correct.  Solipsism and PZs cannot be falsified by data, but they can be eliminated as good explanations because every individual instance of these hypotheses requires special pleading in order to lay claim to being the best explanation.

I'm going to throw out one last Problem for the soul hypothesis: when do souls come into being, and how do they ultimately get bound to their corresponding brains and bodies?  A common claim among Christians is that souls are created at conception, but there are two problems with this.  First, at conception, the fertilized egg doesn't yet have a brain, or even anything that can be identified as the precursor of a brain.  And second, there is the phenomenon of identical twins, which are produced when a fertilized egg splits physically after its first cell division and produces two individuals with identical genes.  Do identical twins share a single soul?  If so, can one of a pair of identical twins be saved and the other not?  If not, where does the second soul come from?

My point in this article was not to solve the mind-body problem.  Mankind has been arguing over that for millennia and there is obviously no way I am going to cut that Gordian knot in a few thousand words.  What I wanted to do here is simply to demonstrate how even such a deep philosophical question can be subjected to scientific inquiry, and how the structure of that inquiry shares some similarity with the scientific inquiry into the nature of chairs and other seemingly mundane phenomena.

BTW, Grant Sanderson, the brilliant mind behind 3Blue1Brown, just released the second chapter in an excellent series on information theory and large language models.  I encourage you to watch it if you want to get a deeper understanding of information theory.  As some commenters have pointed out, the definition of information I have been using here is not the only one there is.  There are lots of different definitions, and a deep connection between information and entropy, which I have been trying very hard to avoid getting into.  Watching Grant's explanations will make it clearer why I have been trying so hard to avoid these details.  This series is about philosophy, and it's hard enough to write about without getting tangled in the technical weeds.  But there are plenty of resources out there if you want to get into the details.

    How can we break it? What is the one thing in the universe you would say is necessary for consciousness to emerge? Something that, if it were changed somehow, then conscious could not exist?

      What makes you think there is such a "one thing"? I don't think there is. I think consciousness is pretty much inevitable, just like life itself.

      I feel like you are kinda leaving something out here. From I have learned so far, I think you are right that thinking of information solely as a correlation between states, seems to work quite well. And that this more or less has to do with classical mechanics.

      But when you suggest consciousness might be inevitable, it sounds like you are implying that this inevitability existed BEFORE atoms and classical mechanics existed in the universe. And that this is where an understanding of quantum mechanics might be useful (something I know very little about).

      In other words, you are not necessarily saying that in order for consciousness to exist, water must freeze at a certain temperature, or that planets must exist, or that Hydrogen must be the most abundant element in the universe. You are also not necessarily arguing that biological brains must first exist. I think what you are saying is that all of these things are secondary and perhaps even inconsequential and that what really matters is what happens or what began when the first quantum fields interacted with each other. (Hopefully I am getting this right because it sounds very interesting.)

      So what I am asking you is, "why?" What is the characteristic of these interactions that, you believe, allows for consciousness to exist in the universe?

      This is not a bad idea. You are right to point out that we have an amazing understanding
      of how much of the brain works (ie the human visual system, the most energy-expensive sensory modality). And a skilled neurosurgeon can sometimes
      remove up to half of someones brain and that patient will go on to make a full recovery. With a normal IQ and no apparent loss of memory.

      But, in theory, there is no one with a brain who does not also has a soul. So I think that makes it a bit difficult for us to know how a brain would work without a soul compared to a brain that already has one. Just as we don't necessarily need to know quantum mechanics to model how planets orbit the sun. See what I mean?

      But one idea might be to look for some kind of difference in the brains of saved people verse unsaved. I recently got into a big argument about this with another Christian at Theology Online that started here:

      My idea being that "the circumcision of Christ" Paul speaks of in Colossians 2:11-12 is the literal "cutting away" of a part of our soul/spirit from the brain that connects us to the flesh and the physical realm, when we become saved. Maybe there would be some physical way to detect this change in us, though I have no idea what we would be looking for initially.

      I am the boss of Young Earth creationism. Sadly, I can tell you most Christians, including most of my fellow YECs get the answer to this sorta wrong.

      The correct answer is that human reproduction is not a biological function. It is a blessing from God. Parallelisms in Genesis can help to make this more clear (though it's not really necessary) I study Bible parallelisms in my free time. That's why I've tried to teach myself Hebrew. I can recognize certain written words now, though I haven't learned yet how to speak them aloud. I have found AI to be particularly useful at finding thematic parallelisms, but the following is based on notes from notes contained in Literary Structure Translation Bible, which I has not yet been completed as far as I am aware. I will send you a pdf that explains it in more detail.

      The first part of the creation week follows a pattern of God's Word, His Work, His Naming. The second part involves His Word, His Work, and His Blessing.

      Later in Genesis, God relegates Naming to Adam and then later Blessing to Jacob, who blesses hiss 12 sons.

      DNA itself contains no instructions for building a human soul/spirit. Cells cannot divide without a nucleus, but this does not mean every individual cell has a soul. The soul arrives as a blessing from God at conception, not from DNA. That is the significance of the parallelism.

      Yes. QM figures prominently in the argument for the inevitability of consciousness, and specifically, the technical details behind how the classical world emerges from the quantum world.

      You are definitely on the right track here. It's very hard to say what is necessary and what is contingent because we only have one data point. But in the end you will see that it doesn't matter. Atoms are just an implementation detail. What really matters is information and computation.

      That's a theological discussion, not a scientific one. Before the Bible (or any holy text) becomes relevant *here* you have to first establish that it is something other than a run-of-the-mill work of human literature.

      Assuming this is a serious question, I will do my best to give you a serious answer.

      The answer I would put my money on is: Yes, some do.

      I should point out that, at the moment, there doesn't always seem to be a clear threshold has which creatures have "true brains" and which ones do not. Looking at particular verses in Genesis and later at the animals which were said to be suitable for sacrifice, they seem to suggest that, one way to distinguish "soul from soulless" creatures, is to look specific features of the circulatory system. Blood chemistry and oxygen transport. And I have found that , for the most part, this seems to work surprisingly well.

      Leviticus 17:11 states: "For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it for you on the altar to make atonement for your souls, for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life."

      The first mention of a sacrificial animal is likely the livestock God specifically created on Day 6. Lets say they were cows. Like men, cows have hemoglobin (red blood) and a closed circulatory system.

      Creatures like insects have hemolymph for blood, and an open circulatory system. Same for crustaceans and most shellfish, like clams and shrimp. They were not suitable to be sacrificed at the altar. And it turns out, most humans would agree that none these particular creatures have much in the way of a personality. And I think from that we can infer that it's rather unlikely that any of these creatures have what can really be called a subjective experience. (Yes these creatures can see, but they don't really seem to use their vision the same way we do).

      Now you might say, "Well so what?" But I think the exception that proves the rule is the cephalopod. Squid and octopuses. They have hemolymph like INSECTS, but they also have a closed circulatory system, like HUMANS. Now most of us would agree that octopuses have a bit more personality than say a spider has. Especially those who keep them as pets and make youtube videos about them.

      It's not PERFECT. Reptiles don't seem to have much of a personality and they are red blooded and closed. Earth worms don't really have red blood cells but their hearts are somewhat humanlike and they have a closed circulatory system as well. But considering all the different kinds of animals their are on the planet, as I said, it seems to work surprisingly well. A bit too well for it to have been just a lucky guess made by a nomadic tribe of goat herders, 5000 years ago, IMHO.

      I think you are taking my claim about memory as stronger than I intended it. I didn't mean to imply that memory is "first and primary", only that it is essential. As an analogy, a rudder is essential to an airplane. It's not "first and primary" -- that distinction probably goes to the wings and the engine. But an airplane can't fly without a rudder.

      I'm using the phrase "subjective experience" intending it to be a synonym for "qualia". There is "something it is like" to see a chair, to sit in a chair, etc. I can't think of any principled way to distinguish the two concepts.

      First, I'm not claiming that *lasting* memory or even *episodic* memory is necessary, just *some* kind of memory. Someone might suppress the long-term episodic memory of a traumatic event, but I really don't think that one can be conscious of an event if they can't remember it *at all*, like not even for a few seconds. What observation could possibly refute this?

      Second, I think some kind of lasting memory is actually required. This is a harder case to make, but here is a sketch of an argument: I don't see any way to persuade someone of my own consciousness without using some form of communication, and that has to be learned and remembered. Even amnesia victims still remember how to speak, still retain some elements of personality and individuality. Where can that possibly come from other than some form of memory?

      Even persuading *myself* of my own consciousness seems to require this. I can't recall anything before I was about four or five years old, so how do I know that I was conscious before that? Even to get to "I think therefore I am" I need to have a referent for the word "think" and I don't see any way to get that without being able to remember something. I think a lot of people subscribe to this view, maybe even a majority, even if they don't overtly realize it. If this were not so, circumcision would be universally regarded as a violent assault rather than a routine and widely accepted practice.

      It's funny that you would pick a goldfish as your example. Do you think goldfish are conscious?

      But I think to some extent, the ability to have subjective experiences is developmental. We to learn, in part, how to see. So that we can understand what our visual system is showing us.       I don't intend to distract from the structure of your extended presentation here ("part 10"). So feel free to ignore all of this. But I would frame this particular topic somewhat differently than you have.

      It feels to me like you share the (very common) view of looking at "consciousness" as binary: do you either have the full complex experience of human minds -- or not? I don't see it that way. I see consciousness as a wide spectrum, that you could have "more of", or "less of", rather than just yes or no. (And human minds aren't the theoretical maximum of this spectrum either.)

      For regular humans ... just how "conscious" are you, when dreaming in REM sleep? What if you're sound asleep in a car, then suddenly awoken during a car accident? For a few seconds, your brain is receiving sensory inputs that you struggle to process and understand. You aren't yet oriented to time or place, or even who you are. Perhaps the car is rolling, and you feel pressure and acceleration and your visual input shows trees outside the window that are upside down. Nothing you are experiencing "makes sense" in the moment. You don't know who you are, or what is happening.

      But you are experiencing something. Are you "conscious" in that moment?

      That moment-to-moment experience would seem, to me, to have very little to do with memory. There is "something it is like" to be a human mind suddenly awoken in a car crash. But it doesn't seem to be about remembering the past.

      But surely you could imagine studying whether someone is conscious, without talking to them. What if the person only spoke a foreign language? Presumably you would start inventing various behavioral tests, like the Mirror Test which demonstrates that some of the higher animals are not only conscious (in the sense of experiencing qualia) but also self-aware (in the sense of having an internal mental model of themselves as an entity in the world).

      But not at "human level" of conscious experience. There is a tremendous amount of complexity that our internal mental life contains, which the much simpler goldfish do not possess.       I don't know what I said to give you that impression because that is definitely not my personal belief. I totally agree with you that consciousness is (or at least could be) a continuum, not a dichotomy. It might even be a vector rather than a scalar. (In fact, I think that's likely.)

      But here's the problem with that: how do you quantify consciousness? How do you measure it? On what basis do you say that humans have more of it than goldfish or an AI (or an IA)? If it's a vector, what is the basis of the vector space? I have no idea.

      The only thing I can think of to do is observe that there seems to be a qualitative difference in the kinds of interactions I can have with humans and the kinds of interactions I can have with goldfish -- at least while the humans are awake. When humans are asleep their behavior is not that different from goldfish.

      I can go on to relate that difference in behavior to my own subjective experience, where I observe that being awake seems to correlate with experiencing consciousness, so it's not that much of a leap to extrapolate that to other humans.       Without memory of *anything* I don't see how you could tell the difference between being asleep and being awake. I think the subjective sensation of being awake is grounded in the memory of being awake on previous occasions, and the fact that these experiences are similar. "What it is like" to be awake *now* is what it *was* like to be awake *before*. When we are born, our brains start to catalog our experiences and takes note when certain experiences seem to be similar to ones it has seen before. When it has enough exemplars of a particular kind of experiences it creates a category, and those categories are what we experience as qualia. Note that this explains why we can't remember anything before a certain age. All of our *conscious* memories are stored *in terms* of these categories, e.g. I saw a chair. So before you can remember having seen a chair your brain first has to figure out that chairs are a thing, and that happens sub-consciously.

      Yeah, I get that, but I don't think your example works. The mental state of someone with no memory at all is really hard to imagine. It has been a very long time since you nor I not anyone else that we can meaningfully interact with has been a being with no memory at all, and so it's really hard for us to imagine what that would be like. It seems to be comparable to trying to imagine what it would be like to be a bat, or a goldfish, or a newborn infant. If *I* wake up after a car crash, I'm still going to have some memories. So what is the origin of the radical difference between our subjective experience of these categories?

      "Very limited, primitive" seems to be doing a lot of heavy lifting there. It's kind of like calling two clay ports and a pile of rocks a "very limited, primitive" computer. It's not technically wrong, but it kind of robs the word "computer" of its modern utility.

      That's why I hedged with "pretty sure". But the reason I'm pretty sure is that there are some things I can directly observe about consciousness despite the fact that I can't define it.       Because my approach to figuring out what "consciousness" means is the same as my approach to figuring out what "chair" means. I start by observing that there are some things that are clearly chairs, and some things that are clearly not chairs, and some things that are ambiguous, and then try to explain those observations, and in particular, to examine the question of whether some kind of extra-physical "chairness" is needed.

      There is no English noun that means "conscious thing", so there is no word that is the consciousness-equivalent of "chair". The language makes the *thing* primary in the case of chairs, but the *property* primary in the case of consciousness. This is actually not unreasonable because consciousness is transient. People can -- and regularly do -- switch back and forth between being conscious and not. In that respect we are kind of like folding chairs. However, there is still an ambiguity because "conscious" sometimes means "potentially conscious" as in "humans are conscious beings" which is understood to be a true statement even when we are unconscious.

Whatever it is, "something" has entered your conscious attention at that moment. That something is the "contents of consciousness".

The mystery instead is why there is a "subjective character of experience". Why is there "someone" who is experiencing? NOT: what is being experienced. The question is about the existence of an experiencer, in the first place. Someone to have those experiences.

      In particular, Nagel was pointing out that there is a difference between what a human mind would experience, if it was wired up to have access to a bat body with sensors (sonar) and effectors (flying wings) ... vs. the actual experience that a bat's own brain is having instead. Nagel says that what it is like to BE a bat is different than what it would be like to be "you", but in a bat's body.

      From my perspective, you keep circling around the core mystery (subjective first-person consciousness), and instead getting distracted by nearby topics (memory, "chair", hearing music vs. seeing grooves, asleep vs. awake, etc.).

Why is *my* consciousness bound to *this* particular place and time and not some *other* place and time? Why is it that it is so easy to explain our shared experience of seeing chairs in terms of objective reality, and so hard to explain our shared experience of consciousness the same way?

      Nagel is a philosopher so he approaches the question from a philosophical point of view. I'm trying to approach it from a scientific point of view, so that has to start with a Problem, which is to say, an *observation* that we can't explain. What exactly is that observation? Well, for *me* it is that 1) I have this subjective experience, 2) other people exhibit behavior that indicates that they have the same subjective experience but 3) there is nothing immediately apparent in the material world that accounts for this shared experience. So we can explain our experience of seeing chairs as a reflection of systems of atoms in particular states. The *reason* we have a shared *experience* of chairs is because we have a shared chair. The chair you are experiencing is the *same chair* as the one I am experiencing, and that is the *reason* that our experience of that chair is the same.

      That maneuver doesn't work to explain consciousness. Our consciousnesses are all private, and apparently *inherently* so. We can correlate our experience of consciousness with brain states, but that's the best we can do, at least at first blush, in terms of connecting that experience to something objectively real. *That* to me is the hard problem.

      Yes, but ... brains can do a whole lot of things. "Functionally equivalent" to a brain is a very high bar. Presumably not all of the brain (or neuron function) is required for consciousness. So all we really have is that something functionally equivalent to SOME PART of the brain is what is required.

      But since we don't know what that part is, we also don't have much information on what the functional requirements are. Of course a thermostat doesn't have parts that can do everything a brain can do. But does it have enough of the part of the brain that implements consciousness inside the brain? Who knows? So the description isn't helpful.

      It reminds me of Jeremy Bentham's arguments for animal welfare (1800's). He was addressing people who complained that animals had neither rationality nor language. His famous response: "The question is not, Can they reason? nor, Can they talk? but, Can they suffer?”"

      In a similar way, I would say that the question is whether they have a subjective point of view, whether there is "something it is like" to be them. Whether they experience qualia, in the moment.

      It isn't about memory, or high-level concepts ("chair"), or a self-model. All those are (very interesting) "add-ons", on top of the core feature of being conscious. (And, in fact, I think we both suspect that memory and high-level concepts and self-models are possible for an intelligent machine that ISN'T conscious. So those are really orthogonal concepts.)

      I mean, ironically, I actually agree with you. But I would speculate that 99% of people who seriously consider this question DON'T agree. That is the fundamental puzzle that Chalmers was talking about (in 1994 when he distinguished the "hard" problem from the "easy" problem of consciousness, in his framework). It's why Searle invented his "Chinese Room" in 1980. It's a fundamental conflict that Dan Dennett and Sam Harris -- otherwise good friends who agreed about almost everything -- could never resolve.

      It's the fundamental mystery that most people are stuck on. I think you owe it a little more attention than "actually relatively straightforward". Certainly the philosophy community doesn't yet agree.

      But that's not so difficult. People black out from alcohol all the time. The fact that you later lose memory of an event, only prevents later introspective access. There can be plenty of other evidence.       You would conclude that you had been conscious, much the same way you conclude that anyone (besides yourself) is ever conscious. You only have introspective access to your own mind. You already need a different approach to conclude consciousness about anyone else. You merely need to use that alternate 3rd-person approach on yourself, if you happen not to have kept any long-term memories of the event.

      OK, I'm willing to grant that there could be multiple independent (to some extent) conscious entities residing in my brain. But (I claim) each of those conscious entities needs to have some kind of continuity of identity in order to have any subjective experience.

      Dennett's thesis is that consciousness is intimately connected with memory, that what consciousness actually *is* is your brain continually writing and re-writing a *history* that accounts for the sensory input it receives. In other words, your perception that subjective experience is a thing that occurs *in the moment* (and is thus not dependent on memory or personal identity) is an illusion. Dennett calls it an "illusion with no illusionist."

      It's hard for me to believe that you actually read the book and don't remember this. It's pretty much the central thesis.

      As it happens, I have actually had almost the exact experience you describe: when I was younger I used to sleep walk. But I have absolutely no recollection of this, and had absolutely no recollection of it even at the time. So it is not at all clear to me that I was conscious while sleep walking despite, my I/O behavior notwithstanding.

      In my opinion, this is more about how you define "I". Perhaps the continuity of personal identity that is the "you" I'm talking to now, in some sense wasn't conscious during your sleep-walking. But SOMETHING was conscious then, even if it wasn't fully "you".

      At some point you would have to start getting concrete about what you think consciousness is for (since you agreed that it added evolutionary survival value), and thus it must have externally observable behaviors, and thus we could test your sleep-walking entity and see whether it could produce those behaviors that require consciousness.

      That's all in the moment, and a bit separate from whether you are able to form lasting memories that are accessible to the "you" that wakes up the next morning.

      They of course don't have the full complexity of an adult human mind's rich internal mental life. This is why I keep coming back to consciousness as a spectrum (and goldfish and newborns are very primitive on that spectrum). They have experiences involving hunger and pain and bright lights. They don't feel envy or ethnic hatred or fear of their own mortality or responsibility for a family. (I also want to repeat that I don't consider adult human minds to be the pinnacle of the complexity that could be imagined for conscious experience for a much more advanced entity.)

    29. A mechanical thermostat, like the one attached to the radiator in a car, transitions between 2 varying states (open and closed). But to me it seems like a stretch to say the thermostat is processing information, or is exhibiting "goal orientated" behavior.

      The thermostat is not making a decision, it just works because it contains an element inside that has a particular rate of thermal expansion. I think for it to qualifiy as information processing, the thermostat would have to be applying a specific criteria to data obtained by some sort of sensory input, with the purpose of organizing the information in such a way that something "new" can be understood from it, or so that some value can be assigned somewhere that did not exist before. Something that says "Let x = 1 when the thermostat has been open for 3 mins."

It has information processing and a decision procedure: if the current temperature is more than 2 degrees above the target temperature, turn on the air conditioner; if the current temperature is more than 2 degrees below the target temperature, turn on the furnace; if the current temperature is +/- 2 degrees from target, turn off both the air conditioner and the furnace.

      So in the case of the house-thermostat, I presume we all agree that there is information processing involved here, that does not exist in the car-thermostat. But neither thermostat has the ability to do something other than what it DOES. Modern chess programs (I'm an avid fan of chess) typically have a bit of "randomness" programmed into them so that they won't necessarily make the same move each time (it makes them less boring). Instead they will choose from a list of equally "Best moves" the program has calculated. With some chess programs, this is a feature that can be turned on or off.

      This might make chess programs an interesting thing to investigate further in this series. I have no idea how "randomness" is programmed (this should right up Ron's alley). But again I assume if we were all FORCED to pick which chess programmed was most like a conscious being, we might all pick the one with some sort of random element programmed into it.

      Although it might ultimately be a red herring because none of these things have freewill. The house-thermostat and the chess program process information as does our human visual system, for example. But we don't have to concentrate or make a decision to see color, the information for color is processed subconsciously. I understand that not everyone agrees we have freewill, but surely we all must agree that if freewill does not exist, then "decision making" cannot be something that distinguishes a consciousness from non-consciousness.

      Well when non-creationists talk about cosmic evolution, it seems to me that the explanations they give, fall completely under the purview of determinism:

      Gravity pulled hydrogen and helium atoms together to form stars, and these stars created heavy elements and so on.. (stellar nucleosynthesis is really only significant to cosmologists at macroscopic level, when they try predict how much of certain element existed in the early universe, that sounds like "determinism" to me) ..and then gravity pulls these heavy elements together to form planets large enough to have an atmosphere and tectonic activity and then complex chemistry arose from these things and eventually started life.

      I don't see where "indeterminism" or "free-will" is invoked anywhere here. And by far, most non-creationists I have encountered would say there is no such thing as free will.

      So in all seriousness I would be interested in knowing WHEN do you think Compatibilism becomes necessary to explain what we observe. I would guess your answer would be sometime after life began. But why?

      However, at a subatomic (quantum) level, the universe is probabilistic, not deterministic. The quantum wave function evolves deterministically, but the outcomes we observe are as purely random as anything could ever be (according to the weighted probabilities).

IIRC There was a phycological experiment done back in the 2000s that seemed to indicate that if the person who is interviewing you for a job, has a sip of hot cocoa right before your interview, then that will greatly increase your chances of being selected. I don't remember all the details, but non-creationists would refer to it and say "See! We don't have free-will!" Because they don't believe in free-will.

      Ahh. Now I see why you brought up chess programs. You are saying that we humans are free to make whatever move we decide is best, even though the process we use to calculate that "best move" is deterministic.

      It may not be a sensory experience of the external world. But that isn't at all important. You have lots and lots of different sensors. Some provide data about the external world (hearing, sight). But others, like proprioception (body part spatial awareness) or interoception (hunger, thirst, etc.) are more internal sensors. And, finally, you have sensory data about your own mental state: introspection, thoughts that arise into the "contents of consciousness", boredom. All of that is sensory data too. It doesn't at all need to be "about" the external world.

      When others speak aloud, and you hear them speak, the sound waves get interpreted as language, and that activates various concepts in your mind. But you can also have an internal narrative, where the same sentences occur in your mind, activating the same concepts, but no actual sound waves ever occurred. Your subjective experience is very similar between the two situations, but only one of them involves the physical world outside of your brain.

I wonder whether you're trying to explain the full details of a complex adult human mind, which are indeed fascinating and have many components. I, on the other hand, was trying to outline the minimal necessary components in order to have any subjective experience ("consciousness") at all -- even if not nearly as complex or interesting as the experience of an adult human mind.

      So when you talk about, for example, long-term memory and personal identity, I totally agree that such items are indeed features of an adult human mind, and part of the conscious experience of the adult human mind, and eventually need to be explained as well. My only pushback is that I can imagine a very primitive subjective first-person point of view "consciousness" that has qualia, but yet NOT those features. This is why I started with the (multi-dimensional?) "spectrum" idea, that we could conceive of a kind of consciousness that is far more primitive than the full experience of an adult human mind. I have NOT been trying to duplicate or explain the entire subjective experience of an adult human mind.

      It's (maybe) like you're studying higher mammals being alive, and I'm pointing out that crystals and viruses are "almost alive", very close to the minimal necessary features to be counted as alive. And you object that they aren't multicellular, don't have circulatory systems, etc. I'm trying to answer the question of what is the LEAST that an entity might have, yet still experience qualia? What is the simplest possible "life" form?

Where we part company is when you say that qualia are an essential feature of consciousness, indeed the *defining* feature, that experiencing qualia is what consciousness *is*. I vehemently disagree with that. I think that the defining characteristic of consciousness is self-awareness, the ability to form a model of your environment that includes yourself as a component. Qualia are a side-effect of that process, and the particular qualia that humans experience are mainly side-effects of being biological. We experience "the redness of red" because evolution equipped us with red sensors (because being able to see red has evolutionary advantages), and so our model of ourselves includes that biological feature. But note that that experience is not universal. There are color-blind people who literally do not experience "the redness of red". I don't think that deficiency makes them any less conscious.

      The reason I brought up math is that, on your view, consciousness requires qualia but not memory, and qualia are, by definition, a feature of sensory experience. Thinking about pure math is about as far removed from sensory experience as any mental activity I can think of. Yes, it's true that in humans you can tie thinking about math back to sensory experience, but I don't see any way to do that without invoking long-term memory as an essential component of the process, and you have denied long-term memory as an essential component of consciousness. So yes, when *I* sit on the couch and contemplate math, that connects to sensory experience through memory. But surely you can imagine a Platonic mind contemplating the irrationality of the square root of two without ever having had any external sensory experience at all?

But that I/O behavior is the *only* thing I have to judge whether or not anything other than myself is conscious. So I too can *imagine* a "very primitive subjective first-person point of view", but the only basis I have for assessing whether or not that "very primitive subjective first-person point of view" *actually exists* and actually corresponds in any way to my own subjective experience is by looking at the thing's I/O behavior, because that's all I have access to.

      When you think about math, you are observing your own thoughts, at a metalevel. With sensors. Observing your internal mental thoughts IS a sensory experience.       I deliberately used the phrase "life form" rather than "alive". The argument is that paperclips reproduce in a manner analogous to the way chicken eggs do. There is an old aphorism, "A chicken is an egg's way of making more eggs." Analogously, humans are a paper clip's way of making more paper clips. The analogy is obviously not perfect. No one actually believes paper clips are literally alive. The point is that the line between living and non-living is much blurrier than most people realize.

      Then we have this very peculiar situation where we both profess to have read the same book and agreed with it, and yet we still disagree. How is this possible? I can think of two possibilities.       That is interesting. This also reminds me that, in life, the structure of our brain changes. Neurons change their shape and new synapses are formed, but "you" are still the same "you".

      AI is telling me right now, that we can actually look at someone's brain and tell whether or not it's owner is a musician. I'm not sure how true that is. But that would seem to lend credence to my idea (as a theist), that we might be able to detect some sort of change in brain when a person becomes "saved".

      But even then you, as clever as you are, would come up with reasons as to why this wouldn't necessarily indicate that there is actually "soul" to be saved.

      And I think this is the same with almost anything, no? That's a reason why I have never been much of a fan of deep philosophical discussion. I suppose sometimes they have can have value. But it seems they can only take you so far..

      This may sound unreasonable at first, but for comparison; before Covid I worked many years as a chef for a wealthy members club. There would be nothing controversial or philosophical in me describing to you what I did at that job, because I actually did the things I say did. And it's not an easy job. But I can easily tell you, in less than 3 sentences, what you have to do to be a good chef, without telling you how to cook anything.

      I think that, If you actually do or have done what you say you can, then you should be able to the same as I can.

      That just means: when given the same inputs, you will ALWAYS get exactly the same outputs. If you have a calculator, and ask it to add 4 + 6, it will ALWAYS say "10" as the answer. You can do it over and over again, and get "10" each time.

For example, if the program were learning to play tic-tac-toe, then it might make random moves, and sometimes lose. When it loses, it should back up to the previous game board state, record that state, make a note of which (random) move it just chose from that state, and next time it plays a game never again make that same move from that same board state."

      Does that meet your criteria? Is that what you were hoping for? That's describing a program that gets better at playing tic-tac-toe, the more that it plays. Because it learns from experience.

      Oh I see. Well I'll have you know that being a chef is considered to be quite a respectable career here in Germany. It takes years of training and the job itself can be hard enough to make grown men cry. I've seen it before, myself included and I'm certainly not embarrassed to admit that. My first head chef was 7ft tall and made Gordon Ramesy look like freaking Santa Claus. There is nothing quite like the subjective experience of the fear of being manhandled by a raving lunatic, while trying to create the perfect "risotto". But that's exactly the type of agony you need to learn how to deal with, all because you wanted to create an excellent meal that you hope will be enjoyed by someone else. Someone you may never even know. Someone's whose face you will never even see.

      It's one of the most difficult and selfless jobs in the world. That's why there's gratuity involved, where in your career there is none. So keep that in mind the next time you go out to eat somewhere. And remember, humans don't necessarily need computer scientists for anything. For all we know, we might actually be worse off because of you. How often do governments use computers to spy on people? How often are they used to kill and murder? Are children better off today, now that they all have smart phones? How much time and money is wasted, shooting robots off into outer-space, while we have so many 4th graders in the US who could use a bit of extra help learning how to read?

      On the other hand, a chef who has been properly trained in selecting the finest produce ,meats and dairy products, helps to sustain the small local farmers. So they can thrive without having to spray cancer causing agents on their tomatoes or feed their cattle something that causes mad-cow disease. So children can have access to the nutrients they need to grow up normal and healthy. And not end up 50lbs overweight and pre-diabetic at age 10, like they do in the US.

      Imagine a world where a man couldn't take his family out to eat once in while. A world where a housewife never gets to relax and have someone cook her something nice for a change. Mr. "Important Computer Guy" can just give her a frozen hot-dog pizza for next year for Valentines Day. Like that's really gonna put her in the mood to do her part in continuing the survival of the human race. (Which is something else we should be thanking good chefs for.) When has a video game ever helped someone to procreate? That's something you'll never be able take credit for. Quite the opposite, more than likely.

      I will never never never never never, let anyone come close to getting away with the insinuation that the career they have, is more complicated or significant than that of the lowly chef who cares about his work. I don't care how many PhDs one has, I can assure you nothing can farther from the truth.

      They are blessed by God. All of the angels in heaven watch over them. And everything that exists in nature cries out against you and finds your scoffing at them to be cruel and obscene.

This is so on-the-nose relevant that I feel I should post this video of Brian Greene and Sean Carroll discussing the deep questions of life, even though I have to admit that I got annoyed and stopped watching at the halfway mark (but I've watched a lot of Sean Carroll lately, so his answers have become somewhat predictable to me).

    I've come to believe that knowing physics doesn't really help much with mysteries like why reality exists, the existence of free will, and how and why consciousness exists. To paraphrase Sean Carroll, if you knew the position and velocity of every particle, like Laplace's demon... (now my opinion...) This would just be an extreme version of cutting up a brain into little pieces and trying to find the mechanism for consciousness. We can see the mechanisms for various cognitive processes in the material of the brain, but there is no solution visible there to how you get from tangible mechanistic things to a phenomenon so abstract that we can't even really name it. Trying to measure it is so hopeless that we're stuck with "I think, therefore I am" -- but does anyone else think, therefore they are? Probably. But there's no possible way to prove this.

  8. At about 46:15 in the Brian Greene / Sean Carroll video, there's a moment that I find revealing:

    Brian Greene: When you think about consciousness then, because this obviously takes us right there, I presume that you view consciousness as this natural outgrowth of a certain set of processes, whether we want to use the language of information theory, or physical instantiation of the laws of physics acting itself out in a particular gloppy, gray structure crenelated inside of our, you know, this bone cage on top of our shoulders -- you presumably just see that as something that happens, when you've got that level of complexity going on?

    Sean Carroll: Yes.

    So the secret ingredient that transforms inert materials and gives rise to consciousness is a high "level of complexity." Brian Greene is literally waving his hands manically.

    To be fair, I have no better explanation for where consciousness comes from. The difference is that they think an explanation is hard but possible; I think it's not just hard, but impossible for fundamental reasons.

The question of whether artificial consciousness has already appeared makes me think of the dispute over spontaneous generation or "abiogenesis" that was settled by Louis Pasteur's swan neck flask experiment in the 1850s. I remember a microbiology professor remarked to the effect that the late adherents to spontaneous generation were more the atheists and materialists, rather than the religious, who thought that life had a divine component.

    2. Maybe the connection between spontaneous generation and the spontaneous appearance of consciousness needs explaining. Putting it that way ought to shed some light on part of the connection as I see it. In both cases, there's a mysterious phenomenon (life, consciousness), and you have the claim that you can get that phenomenon to appear spontaneously by assembling inert materials in a way that simulates the natural context where it's found. The error that the spontaneous generation supporters made, IMO, was to underestimate the complexity of living things. Now we know about dna and we can see that the probability of that dna appearing spontaneously would be absurdly low.

      We don't know what it takes to make consciousness work, and IMO we will never know. But folks that think LLMs are conscious believe that there's nothing particularly special about consciousness. You can get consciousness to spontaneously appear by creating a good enough simulation of consciousness.

    I would be curious to know if you and I are in agreement with this so far, or would you say I am making a mistake here.

    1. I'd quibble a little over your use of the term "empty space" because there isn't any "empty space" in the brain. Whatever space isn't occupied by neurons is filled with fluid. There's also some recent evidence that the brain keeps producing new neurons throughout a person's life. But I don't think those details really matter that much. Conceptually, you are correct. There is something in my brain now which has the potential to rearrange itself somehow to become a new memory later. It's no different from unused RAM in a computer. I don't se what this could possibly have to do with souls.

      This isn't meant to be a jab at non-creationists, because I am realizing that most of us don't really have a "theory of the soul" either. It's just something "somethings have and somethings don't"

    6. Your question is pretty confused. I think the mind-body problem has been *solved* (by Dennett) but that doesn't mean that the problem has ceased to exist. For starters, I might be wrong. Dennett's solution might have a flaw that I haven't realized. But even if I'm right and Dennett's solution is correct, I still have to persuade you and Don, and that obviously still very much a work in progress. A scientific Problem isn't truly solved until everyone agrees that it is solved -- or at least until enough people agree that they're willing to write the rest off as intransigent crackpots.

      From my view, at this point one of the things that is confusing me is why would refer to Dennet's work at all. I have never read any of his books. But let me show you how Grok says he solves the Mind-Body Problem:

      1 and 2 would be completely non-controversial to any creationist who has seriously considered the M-B problem.

      3 to me seem a bit vague and inconsequential. It just leaves me wondering, "what test did Dennet do that makes Ron believe this is true."

      4 is ultimately no different than how any YEC like myself would expect an Atheist to solve the M-B problem. That "your mind" or "your consciousness" is an illusion generated by several different things being processed in different parts of the brain. I was not "confused" when I tried to suggest to you that "perhaps there can be no M-B problem atm because we don't understand the mind well enough yet"

    1. I appreciate your interest in a follow-up post. I haven't really tried to argue a complete story yet, so I'm not surprised that it might seem incoherent to you. I'm more ... agnostic, about ChatGPT. "Probably not", would be my guess, but only tentatively.

      But it has to start with a theory of consciousness. Mine is about an active process that is receiving input from its environment, forming a model of the external world, and making decisions and choosing actions based on that model. The internal mental model, generated by sensory data (plus prior learned expectations) is what "qualia" are ... aka "the contents of consciousness".

      Thermostats (as trivial and simple as I can imagine) just barely qualify. Goldfish are better.

      ChatGPT is way more complex in many, many ways (e.g. use of language). But it isn't an ongoing process, it doesn't really receive sensory input, it doesn't have a model of the external world, etc. It's missing a lot of the features that I would expect a conscious entity to have.

      (All the famous LLM "hallucinations" basically come down to the fact that their entire world is the corpus of text, and they really aren't even aware that there's some different external world also, and that it matters whether something is true in the external world, not just whether it can be found in the text. They're only just now starting to do "model-based reasoning", e.g. with the vibe coding applications. There, the resulting code itself, and then running that code in some external system and seeing what it does, is an actual different world, separate from the corpus of trained text.)

      Does that help? I feel pretty strongly about ("trivial") consciousness in thermostats and goldfish. I'm suspicious about ChatGPT; it seems unlikely to me, but my opinion there is weak. (If it helps, Cameron Berg in the Sam Harris podcast I linked, proposes that LLMs are "more likely" to be conscious during the training phase of their lifecycle -- where there is an external world of a training corpus that is different from their internal imperfect model of that corpus, plus continuous feedback and learning -- than they are during the post-training use phase. I kind of get where he's coming from.)

I think a system needs to be embedded in an environment (i.e. have sensors and actuators) but I think this is necessary but not sufficient. You seem to think embedding is sufficient (and necessary).

      I also think that the Internet is *potentially* a sufficiently rich environment by itself to sustain consciousness. I don't think ChatGPT is embedded in the right way yet, but I don't think it's far off either.

      OK, I think this is where you and I part company. There is *something* that distinguishes humans from thermostats. No one disputes that the behavior of a thermostat can be fully accounted for without the need to contemplate the possibility that a thermostat might have a soul. But many people dispute that human behavior can be fully accounted for in the same way, and they specifically cite "consciousness" (whatever that word might actually mean) as the thing that cannot be easily accounted for. On that view, consciousness, by definition, cannot be trivial.

      I'm referring to what Chalmers talks about as the "Hard Problem" of consciousness (vs. what he refers to as the "Easy Problem" of consciousness). What Nagel refers to in "what it is like to be a bat". What Sam Harris refers to in "the contents of consciousness". I think my view of the topic is aligned with the topic those philosophers were addressing. (Although of course I come to a different conclusion than they do.)

      In some ways, perhaps you and I agree. What is called "the Hard Problem" is why anything in physics ever has any conscious experience ("qualia") at all. Many, many people think that this is an extremely difficult question, perhaps beyond the abilities of "science". I think instead that conscious experience comes relatively quickly. (Sort of analogous to how very simple Turing Machines can implement any computation.) So I think "the Hard Problem" is easy. (And maybe you do too.)

      But then comes the "Easy Problem" of consciousness, which is how we implement all the interesting and complex mental abilities of adult humans. I think that's a challenging and difficult task -- but it's "just" engineering. That is the place where all the difference between a human and a thermostat happens. It's a huge gulf!

      But (in my opinion), you don't ALSO have to solve "the Hard Problem", on the way to building human-level minds. I believe "the Hard Problem" was ALREADY solved, way back at the thermostat level. It's "the Easy Problem" where all the complexity and challenge lies.

      I'm not accepting Chalmers characterization of the problem, at least not yet. My framing of the problem is in the context of the scientific method, which always starts with an observation. My observation is that I experience something that I call "consciousness", and that I see quite a bit of evidence that other people, and possibly other animals, experience something similar, but it's really hard to identify anything in Objective Reality that fully accounts for these experiences. That's the Problem.

      OK, I'm with you on that. But thermostats typically don't have any memory. The live purely "in the moment". They also don't have any sensory input that gives them information *about themselves*. I have direct experience of of my embodiment, and internal feedback loops inside my brain that gives me some direct sensory experience of my own thought processes. I think these are all essential components of the subjective experience that *I* call "consciousness". Thermostats have none of those things.

      But this was my whole point about a "spectrum" of consciousness. As the interior mental life gets more and more complex, I agree that it becomes much more interesting. What I am rejecting is that there is some OTHER important barrier along that spectrum, where to one side all the entities are "not conscious", and then they pass some magical feature set, and suddenly all the more complex entities are "fully conscious". Everyone is searching for what this magical transition point is, and everyone fails to find it.

      My point is that there is no magical transition point. (Just like there is no specific place where the quantum wave function "collapses"!) The thermostat is ALREADY as (trivially) "conscious" as any piece of physics can be. The ONLY thing you have left, is a smooth spectrum of steadily increasing mental complexity. Which is very very interesting!

      My primary claim is that there will NEVER be a discovery of some "other" barrier between non-conscious vs. conscious. Something in future science, where you get to say: no to insects, but yes to mice. People are looking for a key scientific difference there to allow them to conclude something about consciousness on either side of that line ... and they will never find anything. There is no bright line there.

      I could understand if you took the pan-psychist position that everything is conscious, that consciousness is somehow fundamental to the fabric of reality. But that is NOT the position you are taking. You've said unequivocally again and again that some things -- rocks, water, and ChatGPT in particular -- are NOT conscious. There "level of consciousness" is indistinguishable from zero. But for some reason that I still can't fathom, a bimetallic strip somehow crosses the threshold into consciousness, even if only by a little bit. That is the part I don't get.

      OK, but *you* are the one who introduced Searle into the conversation in order to better define the problem:

      That seems to be converging towards something more reasonable, yes, but I'm still mystified by your exclusion of ChatGPT from the ranks of the conscious. A Nest is essentially an arduino with a thermometer attached. Is there something special about thermometers? Why does a thermometer promote a computer to the ranks of the conscious but a keyboard not?

      Yes, that's exactly right. But the reason we're arguing about it is that you have taken a very clear position that makes no sense to me: knowing the temperature makes something conscious, but knowing what someone is typing does not. And this is true even if the temperature is presented as digital data and the device has no way of attaching any semantics to that data. A Nest thermostat has no idea what a temperature actually is. All it knows is that there are bits coming in.

The only difference between a Nest and ChatGPT is several orders of magnitude of processing power (in ChatGPT's favor) and a directly-connected temperature sensor. What is it about temperature sensors that imbue a system with (a tiny bit of) consciousness that keyboards don't? (And BTW, ChatGPT has access to temperature sensors too, just with a few more layers of indirection.)

      I'm not sure I have too much more to add on this subject. But I thought of another analogy that may help. You're familiar with Dan Kahneman's "System 1" vs. "System 2"? His book "Thinking, Fast and Slow"?

      In a recent repeat of an old Sam Harris podcast (#150, "The Map of Misunderstanding", @9:15), Kahneman uses this example: "what is 2+2?" The answer comes to your head, immediately, unbidden, without effort: "4". But if I ask you instead to "multiply 24x17", then "you have to work, to get this idea ... effortful."

      Now, we have to be careful when we aim to exclude "consciousness" from various computations. Experiments with split-brain patients demonstrate pretty conclusively that both the left hemisphere and the right hemisphere seem to maintain separate "consciousnesses" in the same body, despite the fact that you are only able to have a verbal conversation with the left hemisphere. So just the fact that the entity we're talking to, verbally, doesn't have conscious experience of something, doesn't necessarily mean that there isn't something else which is having that conscious experience.

      But: despite that, I think there would be widespread agreement that "System 1" in the mind does an enormous amount of computation -- but it is unconscious, or subconscious, and "just" pattern matching associative memory. It is the SECOND system, "System 2", which is the conscious part. And which only has access to a subset of the computations that the brain is doing.

      If you buy that distinction ... then my point would be that ChatGPT is doing (only) "System 1" computation. That's very interesting and complex pattern-matching computation, using a lot of "processing power" ... but it's the wrong KIND of computation (for consciousness). Consciousness requires assembling sensory data ("qualia") into some kind of world-model, which is then used to make decisions. (In my opinion.) ChatGPT is doing a whole lot of computation ... but it isn't doing THIS computation. It's no more conscious than your brain's System 1 is.

To restate my overall position, I think that consciousness, or qualia, is in a class of phenomena that is not amenable to science or science-adjacent things like logic and math, much as we'd like it to be. The way I see it is as if the set of all concepts that can be reduced to scientific questions is not mathematically closed. There are questions that are reachable from that space that fall outside of it. It might not be possible to prove that consciousness is in that category, but it might be possible to prove that such questions exist. I think Godel and Turing actually accomplished that, but their methods are probably too narrow to be of much help here.

      If you acknowledge that there are phenomena like that, then all we have to discuss is whether or not consciousness is one of them. I wish I could bring Godel back to life to help advise.

      This can be applied to the proof, also. I was reading yesterday about Hilbert's Entscheidungsproblem and how von Neumann framed the problem, but expressed that he had no clue how to solve it. Then a young Alan Turing, who was an admirer of von Neumann, came along and solved it. Apparently, von Neumann went through life lamenting all the great discoveries that just fell through his grasp and went to others.

      So, I have an open mind with respect to that.

      You have written about the Objective Reality Hypothesis (which I would call the Objective Reality Postulate). If you define reality as everything that can, in principle, be part of objective reality as understood by humans, then you could pose the question as to why objective reality exists, or what caused it to exist? Whatever the reason is, it would have to come from outside objective reality, if you don't want to be circular and say it exists because of something inside it that exists. If the reason is not in objective reality, then it can't be seen or explained. So, already, things have become incoherent. You could say that it's an invalid question; perhaps because it falls outside objective reality -- which again seems circular, I think. I personally think that such questions can't be easily dismissed. You might have noticed that this is basically the cosmological argument for the existence of god, except that I'm not claiming something supernatural as the solution; I'm making the more conservative claim that it just demonstrates that there are questions we might consider valid to ask, but inherently lack even the possibility of a coherent answer.

      You said yourself that consciousness is an extremely slippery concept, so I'll just say that, in my opinion, the question of how to explain consciousness is hopeless for similar reasons to the above. Consciousness created science to serve itself. Science needs people to judge whether a claim is sufficiently well supported. I mean, maybe an AI could be programmed to evaluate claims, but the point is still to convince human beings. The silicon doesn't care. This paragraph represents kind of a gut-level feeling for why consciousness might escape science; I don't really want to belabor this part because it's just not what I want to talk about.

      I'm not sure what you mean by explain. I think it's debatable as to whether science really explains anything. In high school, I was kind of psyched to take physics and find out what gravity is.       I was taught that a hypothesis is something you can test, whereas a postulate is something you agree on so that you can prove other things. Without a shared reality, you can't prove anything. If you are going to assert that objective reality is a hypothesis, then you have to propose other axioms that you could use to test whether objective reality exists.

    11. I must have been unclear. What I think has no objective reality is the concept of a chair. You can objectively sit on a physical object. Whether you call that object a chair is arbitrary. If I sit on a rock, is that a chair? What if I put the rock in my living room and call it a chair?

      It's interesting... I did some learning in medieval history. Apparently the concept of feudalism has been contested among medieval historians. Feudalism is the practice of subdividing land into fiefs and distributing it to vassals, which were lower nobles that swore allegiance and promised military service in exchange for the land. No one in the middle ages had a concept of feudalism; this was invented by later historians. If you delve deeper into the question of whether feudalism was a real thing, you find that society was organized one way in mainland Europe (let's say, the extent of Charlemagne's kingdom) and another way in the British isles. As you zoom in, you can find that there were a finite number of agreements between nobles, and you can enumerate them. Was this specific deal an example of Feudalism? Each example had a lot of contingencies on the specific time and place. Was this example better seen as part of a pattern or was it a one-off?

      Ah. Yes, well, that is definitely a harder case to make. The "concept of a chair" falls into a broader category of things (lower-case t) often referred to as "ideas". The objective reality of ideas is a harder case to make than the objective reality of chairs, but it can be done, and I'll get to it eventually but the TL;DR is that ideas are made of information, which is to say, ideas are states. They are not systems. But chairs are states too! The same set of atoms can be a chair or a not-chair depending on their state. So if chairs can be part of objective reality, so can ideas.

  13. I just thought of a rubric that one might use to filter possible explanations for things. It might not be original, but I don't recall hearing it before. I was thinking metaphorically about how a wave only interacts with things that are of a size close to its own wavelength, and, I thought: an explanation for a concept should be at about the same granularity as the concept itself. For instance, the universe is theorized to have started with a big bang. The idea and explanation are both very coarse grained. An explanation for the beginning of the universe would not be book length and impossible to summarize or reduce without sacrificing essential features, like, say, the history of the city of London. Metaphorically, the cause and effect are going to have a similar wavelength.

    Consciousness is a singular phenomenon that's right at the beating heart of, let's say, humanity's experience of being. It's a prerequisite for any other question. Any analysis of the phenomenon as a whole ought to be very coarse grained.

    Like a fractal, you can no doubt find smaller subproblems nested within the greater problem, on down to infinity. But no accumulation of small problems and small explanations could ever solve the big problem.

    That's the idea.

    1. If you buy my premise, that the explanation should be the same level of granularity as the thing being explained, then talking about goldfish, thermostats, or people who are partially conscious will not help with explaining the phenomenon writ large.

    2. I was trying to think of counterexamples to the "granularity principle". Perhaps evolution is a counterexample. Darwin amassed a lot of small examples and built up to the whole. But maybe evolution itself has inherently small grains. Darwinian evolution is the sum total of countless numbers of randomly-occurring traits; countless numbers of random encounters with predators and diseases. And evolution itself has connotations of being *incremental*. If you say Latin *evolved* into French, you know that the change was slow and incremental.

      On the other hand, evolution is considered a single theory that's broadly applicable. It claims to explain the forms that all living things take. Are some theories coarse-grained at the top, but possible to reach by stacking smaller grains? Or is it just meaningless to talk about the granularity of a concept?

      Help me out here. I'm not in love with this idea yet. I won't miss it if it has to die.

    3. So his argument seems to be that, consciousness exists without an observer, computation is in the eye of the observer, therefore consciousness can't be computation. The issue is that we don't know of a physical process that can't in principle be simulated by a computer. Now, some people assert that QM is truly random, i.e. the state that the system takes has no cause (I hope I'm characterizing that right). Is that a difference that matters? The computer could theoretically observe real quantum systems and use that as a source of randomness rather than use a pseudorandom number generator.

      We're never going to be able to find a property of the physical world that we can prove is nondeterministic. How do you prove that something has no cause? Can you rule out interactions with dark matter particles or neutrinos? I think proving that something has no cause presents problems of fundamental logic. But anyway, pure randomness, even if it exists, doesn't seem to help with the problem of consciousness. The behavior of any process can be expressed like this:

      D + R + X

      Where D is all influences that are deterministic, R is all influences that are purely random, and X is... supernatural causes. If you don't believe in the supernatural, then you can set X to zero.

      I think if you look at things this way, you can avoid wasting time talking about the deterministic and random components of concepts like consciousness and free will. There are clearly deterministic processes in consciousness and decision making. If we're trying to answer whether those processes are *fully deterministic* or not, then we can ignore processes in D, because they can't change the answer. Computation falls within D. Everything in D can be calculated in principle. What else is there? Antognini mentions new physics. Whatever the new physics does still has to break down into D+R+X.

      Antognini has shown that computable consciousness presents paradoxes. But, IMO, all the other explanations also present paradoxes. Reality is weird.

      BTW, what do you guys think about interstellar travel? I think your opinion about interstellar travel reveals something about how you reason about reality.

      Yeah, you'd think that would be impossible, but it turns out that you actually can do it. In quantum mechanics, the existence of true indeterminacy is a logical consequence of Bell's theorem plus one or two additional assumptions. But that's a long story.

      Thanks for taking a look. I thought that the randomness had to do with how a particle chooses where it's going to be when the wave function collapses. My understanding is that these researchers are trying to get rid of the observer problem by developing a theory of quantum causality. Maybe the theory is limited to just the observer problem? Or maybe I misunderstood the article or QM? To me, randomness and causality are closely related. If there is a cause for why the particle appears where it does, then it isn't random. If the particle appears in a location with no cause, that's the same as saying it's purely random.

    Consciousness is in the zeitgeist. I'm seeing the topic discussed in more and more different places. "AI"

    On the subject of QM and causality, New Scientist had an article last year about a group that is working on a theory of quantum causality.

    Here's a free research paper by Ormrod and Barrett, 2 of the researchers in the New Scientist article.

    Sadly, I'm not a physicist, so I'm hoping Ron can read and tell me if it looks important.

    2. I was born in '80 and I heard of the book, but I never read it. I think it had an aura of genius around it. I had no idea that the central conceit was to solve how consciousness can arise from ordinary material. I've never really grokked what makes Bach's compositions so extraordinary, but the idea that modern musicians are so in awe of his music -- it's intriguing.
