Hard drives are a non user servicable part on the imacs because it requires removing the very sensitive and very dust prone screen to get to. So if the user shouldn't be servicing the part, why does apple need to use something standard?
Having built a really nice computer I'm not even tempted to mod puts Apple in the good column, for me. If I wanted to mod, I'd get the Mac Pro. If all I need is more disk, there's the thunderbolt-compatible drive.
The iFlow thing is more ambiguous for me. It's not that Apple's evil, it's that the iFlow guys shoulda known better. Still, kinda sucks.
If you really believe that Apple is evil, while another corporation is 'good' (say, Google), then you have a delusional grasp of what Corporate entities are and how they behave.
Just a reminder, they're not a sports team, they're not people, and they don't have morals. If anything they're all evil aliens in this society. Grow up and stop picking corporate sides.
sounds a bit more evil / stupid than normal, to me. I was thinking to buy an iMac, thanks for helping me see the error. I'll get a PC instead, then it will at least be somewhat upgradable / compatible.
Have to disagree on this one. There are only two ways you could reasonably say that Apple's being evil here. #1) there's a reasonable industry-wide expectation of universal upgradability of all devices, or #2) they made some kind of promise of upgradability that they are re-negging on. Neither of these are true for Apple devices. In fact, anyone who's been paying attention will have seen this (and further embrace/extend behavior) coming. Is it evil? No more so than Android Compatibility Test Suite (http://daringfireball.net/linked/2011/05/12/google-android-control).
@Sam: Just start with the hard drive you want and upgrade RAM later (easy). I just bought an iMac with a 2TB drive and I don't foresee any issues with this. RAM upgrades are DIY so that's not a problem. Good luck finding any sort of similar quiet PC with zero cables and a giant display. I'm sure if you can find one it will probably be cheaper and won't get viruses too.
